M240i - thinking persons M2?

Hey!
I see someone put up they had just taken a new M240i
I’ve had an M2 comp - manual, and just had an M4 comp Xdrive, now in a GT4…
But… over the winter the GT4 has not been much fun on the wet and slippery Cotswolds roads where I live (yes - I know it’s not a winter car :-)) )
Having previously had a face lifted A45 - with the trick diff option around 2017/2018 - the all wheel drive availability of the performance of that made it the most fun car - in all weathers I can remember having…
I guess the GRY is an obvs choice for 4WD fun, but does anyone in an M240i have any insights?
Would I be ‘fed up’ quickly? Is the pace a bit off?
Seems like a great little missile - and I can get one a fair bit cheaper than an M2 also…
I’m only doing 3-5k miles per year these days, so thinking the M240i - with a load of kit in it might be a good way to go next?!

I have a G42 M240i and love it. I came from an (eventually) remaped X3 M40i.
How it would feel compared to what you have had I can't say, but I find it really easy to use what it has a lot - and I like that. The power over 60 is nice and feels like the last C63 I drove as opposed to my last M240i which whilst fun didn't feel anywhere near as quick as this does.
It feels very planted thanks to the AWD but does still feel a bit heavy. Not X3 heavy by any means but a test drive would be needed. It is, though, IMO, great fun with heaps of useable power that keeps going well - and I mean well - into licence losing territory. Unlike the last M240i which was a powerful engine in a car barely able to cope, this one can cope and cope really well thanks to a good set up and AWD coupled with more power of course.

I would expect a bit of ‘heft’ as the 4wd system would be a penalty on weight, but in the other hand - the all weather ability must be higher?
I found with the M2 comp, it was a REAL handful in the wet or damp, greasy winter conditions, to the point where the Mdiff was working overtime - even at 5 tenths in those conditions, so in reality unless it was bone dry & above 15-18 c, it wasn’t really ‘hooked up’…
Similarly - GT4 - with cup 2’s… pretty hopeless unless similar dry conditions. I played follow the leader to a cupra a few weeks back, wet, greasy, and generally not much fun, I wouldn’t have wanted to keep the pace for very long tbh…
M4 Comp - xdrive, no problem… but it’s a big old girl on B roads…
The M240i is specced with the adjustable dampers also - I think that’s a ‘good’ to have? Does yours have them - any real need, not sure what you reckon?
I can basically get an M240i - latest model - for what I was paying for the M2 comp - in 2019… I know it’s not a full fat ‘M’ car, but I bet in anything but perfect conditions - the M240i would be as quick or quicker…
I think given the tech of the xdrive - that’s a pretty good deal, given how much prices have gone up in general since ‘19/‘20…?

I still have my OG M2 DTC which was used as my daily 12/15K miles PA up untill buying my M240IXDRIVE which i've done 22K miles to date and have to say the 240 is seriously impressive and quicker than the M2 but the M2 sounds better and just has that special feel to it but it's a close call as to which I'd choose now as a daily commuter. I have also recently taken delivery of the New M2 but i ordered the manual gearbox in that as i don't intend using that as a daily,now that is totally different to the other two a real handful that just makes me smile from ear to ear the only downside to that is i can't have a sunroof in that which the other two have.

Don’t get me wrong, given what I have and where I have been in last few years - cars wise, I could easily ‘do’ a new M2, I would also go manual, my M2 comp was manual too, it was ‘very right’ as a car, pretty much had everything you needed for fun - and nothing that you didn’t… (I should have had the big brake kit tho)
My GT4 is a manual - that’s also very special, in my humble view, it has carbon ceramics - it’s one of the best bits of it - never worrying about stopping!
If I went new M2 I might go ‘full storm trooper spec’ white with black ‘stick on bits’ - lol… I’ve never taken myself too seriously, my M4 was sau Paulo yellow with Yaz Marina blue interior, it got a lot of love, despite the grille… :-))
Has your 240 got the adaptive dampers? The one I am looking at has, seems like testers rate them? Mind you - we’ve all driven things and thought ‘what is that tester on about - this is crap or great’ (delete as needed :-))
Love the fact you have 3x of the lineage, pretty good for back to back comparison!
My wife has a cayman t - I drive that back to back with the GT4, I’d say it’s not much overall ‘slower’ despite the Bhp difference…
One other thing - the loss of the ‘shift knob’ on the 240? Is that annoying? I used to drive my M4 on the shift knob, a bit like old skool touring car style, was a fun dimension, but I see it’s just a drive selector in the middle now…?
I’m currently considering a new M2, M2 Comp or 240i xdrive so it’s interesting to read the feedback.
I’ve had a OG M2 and lastly a M135i xdrive, the M135i had 19’s and standard dampers but I thought it rode really well and soaked up the bumps and imperfections well.
It was better riding than a Leon Cupra before that which had adaptive dampers set to comfort!
Hopefully the 240i is similar to the M135i in that regard even if the adaptive dampers aren’t specced!
Have you (or anyone) had any good deals on new 240i’s? I’ve got a price off TRL for new (PCP) but it isn’t miles away from the M2 price wise once you add some spec on the 240i (M2 has most stuff as standard).

M240i is quoted as £549 and £3350 although you can easily add £100pm+ by the time you’ve specced a few packs, optional alloys, HK, metallic, adaptive suspension etc. APR is 6.9% vs 4.9% for the M2 so that causes some of that issue as well as the M2 being well specced from standard.
I’d consider a used M240i really, £40k would get a low mileage decent spec car at 18-24 months old currently.

I drove an M240i - yesterday, wow…
I was impressed.
I see what they say about the steering feel on the centre point, granted that could be sharpened. But for everything else - it’s quite a peach. Handling wise, the x-drive really adds something over the rwd ‘only’ of my previous M2 comp. The way the torque builds and the way the top end power comes in. It’s a cracking little missile. It’s also not as ‘obvious’ as the M cars, slightly more sedated - a tad more ‘sleeper’ in looks.
The only angle I don’t love is the view straight back towards the car from the head on - at the front. The rest of the angles I really like - they work well. Coming from an M4 comp - where pretty much every angle is a challenge to look at…
I wanted to literally ‘hate’ the big curved screen on the dash… but came away loving it. Bugger - new tech - actually being better, what a shocker..!! Do like the ‘old skool’ round speedo & tachometer in the M2…
Next to that - refinement for daily vs mix of head banger mode when in the mood (this one had adaptive dampers) - seems very well balanced. A super comfortable mini ‘gt’ car for most of the time.
When moving about & pressing on, it really has the fun feel of my face lifted A45 - 2016 model. 370 brake and 500 torques - is loads - if you took the badge off & said: ‘Go try that M car’ I’m pretty sure most would come back with a big grin and saying what a great M car…

I am negotiating on price over the weekend - expect to have my backside in one - for next weekend.

Basically ‘the motor trade’ has conspired between buying part ex dealer and retail on the new car dealer, to fudge the deal up.
Both playing mirrors on the value of the p-ex (trying to maximise their side of the transaction)… stupid in extreme…
So currently this deal is now ‘frustrated’…
Which is, er, frustrating…
They must have people queuing up to buy new cars - silly Billy’s that they are…

Great car, nice size on the road, terrific B58 engine, but i stupidly got one without the adaptive suspension which was a mistake. I subsequently tried one with the better adaptive dampers and i'd say they are a necessity.
Performance is great, zingy free-revving engine is very quick, but doesn't always feel exciting. Not M car exciting anyway - i traded it in for a new M3.
But i did really like it in the 10 months i had it. Good for touring, big boot, excellent mpg - over 40MPG on motorway easily.
Rear seats only big enough for children, but they do fold down for longer loads.
It is quite low to get in/out of, plus the doors do open very wide if you were going to park it in a garage etc. But overall a thumbs up from me.

I ask because I am not financing, only looking at cash purchase and mainly looking for an M240i. Am aware the xdrive would be better but not sure it was available in the older versions in this age range so all of them are M240i RWD only. Is it still worth it?
I basically want to make sure i am making the right decision. My head says pay £20K and get the M240i. My heart wants a 2017 M2 i've seen for £26K.
