Anyone own a G15 840i?
Discussion
Currently have an F82 M4 CP. PCP is up in June and I've got the "what do you want to do next" letter from BMW Finance.
Love my M4. Mineral white on Sakhir, well optioned (not fully loaded but strong spec). Hasn't put a foot wrong in the 2.5 years. Got it at 6k miles and currently just ticked over 21k.
The letter triggered the window shopping and I've seen a well specc'd 840i. Sapphire black on black, ultimate pack, 9k miles and the initial finance numbers are fine.
However.
1. Am I stupid leaving a proper M car for a GT? I don't do track days, pretty conscious of the speed limits and rarely use the power, but it just looks the nuts. I love the power dome on the bonnet, the CP seats, the wheels, just everything looks "proper"
2. What's the 840i like? it's a 3 litre single turbo with two stages as I understand it. I believe it's called "twin power turbo" which isn't actually 2 turbo's. My local dealer are awesome (Sytner Maidenhead). They have a couple of 840i in stock and they're arranging an extended test drive next week (hopefully over a weekend), but would really appreciate any real-world owners views. I've consumed youtube videos and they're largely positive. I'm only considering the coupe / convertible models. Don't need a saloon, we have another car for family duties.
3. What's included in the ultimate pack? From the initial ad, I've seen the car has things like the laser lights, assisted driving, alcantara head lining, drive recorder, carbon roof and a few other bits. Full spec here (it's just come into stock so no pics). https://shorturl.at/fnsHS
4. I'm now on my 4th BMW. What else is out there that I should consider? £45k budget, 4 years old max, 20k miles. Looks over performance. Coupe / convertible only.
Appreciate any input

I had an 840i Coupe for a couple of years. It was actually a lovely thing, but definitely more of a Grand Tourer rather than a sports car. Rapid enough but it was more at home wafting along.
Things I liked:
Very smooth and comfortable
Great tech (I had the full Driving Assistant Pro which worked fairly well, but would occasionally misread speed limit signs and hit the brakes...).
Looked cool (or at least I thought it did - a few friends thought it looked a bit 'golf club').
Relatively rare (at least, I didn't see many of them).
Surprisingly economical on long journeys (I saw 40mpg a few times).
Quite practical - big boot with folding seats.
Things I didn't like:
It's big - very big. Multi-storey car parks were a challenge.
No useable back seats - for a car so long, I couldn't see how it had less space than an M4
Extended warranty looked very expensive (although I sold mine before I needed it, but have a feeling it was quoted at £2k per year).
Overall - I loved it and would have another but the lack of rear seats was more of a problem than I was expecting, and as I tend to visit old 1960's inner city car parks it was just that bit too big.

Appreciate your input guys. Panda, your car is Tanzanite right? Looks good. Reg, is yours Dravit / Skyscraper?
Did these cars come with different seat options? Standard and sport seats? i think the sport ones are "chunkier" around the shoulder area. For me, that's a must have from an aesthetic perspectice, same with the alcantara headlining. Weird, but the heart wants what the heart wants
I know what you mean about the rear seats, but they're not needed in my personal application. There's a convertible that's been hanging around for weeks and weeks at Arnold Clark Irvine, slightly more expensive at £48k but only 1k on the clock and it's had 2 price drops since being listed on 1st November. I may make a ballsy offer on that one.
The warranty worries me as part of the total cost of ownership maths and something I need to look into. My M4 is £750 including roadside assistance with the £250 excess. I've heard the same of the £2k renewals on this, which tells its own story.
Overall, still on the fence, but am erring towards keeping my M4 as I think it's aging ridiculously well and will be looked at fondly like the e46 is now.
Given the state of the market, I'm going to be ballsy with regard to offers and not rush into anything but appreciate your inputs.

Yes, dravit grey with cognac interior
I think sports seats only std on M cars, but may be an option on Msport
I'm keeping this one, as the refinancing offer has dropped payments from 750 to 450 pm, and there's no other 4 door GT that appeals in the sub £80k range
Not even looking at warranties, nor gap ins, etc., it's a lump of metal, if it breaks or gets broken, I'll mend or bin off!
I agree, the market for these is dropping; the dealer may well accept a lowball offer.
Worst case, keep your M4, lovely car with better eventual trade in

Thats a rare colour combo! There's currently a black one with that interior on the bmw site which I don't like but on dravit, looks great. Will be speaking to the Chigwell team in 30 mins and dry to get a video of the car. It's ticking all the boxes, but the numbers need to stack up, but as you said. I'm still walking away in an awesome carI think sports seats only std on M cars, but may be an option on Msport

Have you looked at the 850i? There's 30 examples on AT, a lot of engine for the money!
I have. not at my price point within the parameters in my original post. And I will only by from a main dealer to get the warranty. Having said that. There's an epic one on AT in an awesome green. I love it

It's been on sale since 19th October. If he knocks 12 grand off it, i'll have it

Indeed!
Have you considered a Lexus LC?
Literally looking at them yesterday. LC500's are still up there price wise. Cheapest dealer network one is 50k with 50k on the clock, and still researching the 350 hybrid, but only 2 for sale on the luxus.co.uk , but they are absolutely stunning looking for sure. Have you considered a Lexus LC?
The 840 with Sytner Chigwell is off the table. Turns out it's just a base spec car with no "ultimate pack" which makes sense as there was no ultimate pack option on these.
I've just pinged Arnold Clark on the convertible they have. Over budget, but an opportunity to be ballsy

This is a perfect spec for me

That can't be a factory option colour can it? Has to be a wrap?

Puzzles me how something with this sizeable footprint, considering how much real-estate and presence it has on the road, can offer such tiny rear space.Guess, that is the price one pays for the rakish good looks.
I was quite fancying an 840i Coupé but the sheer size of the thing, considered in the context of some of the places where I go, meant it'd be a pain to live with. Also, for a GT intended to do big trips the rear room is quite poor and there's no rear arm rest with integral cupholders like you get on a 4 Series. Furthermore, the seat belt "sockets" in the rear protrude and make dents in the leather if you fold the seats down. Finally, the 8 Series a really striking car when you see one. I can't help thinking you'd have to be careful where you park it. Lots of jealous types around!
On the subject of warranties... I'd have to keep a warranty on one for peace of mind. When I put the reg number of one into BMW's warranty calculator it came back with £2,400 a year. That's when you look to apply a comprehensive BMW warranty to a car purchased independently. I believe the premiums are a little cheaper if you're renewing cover on a car bought from a BMW main dealer and that there's slightly better cover. Also, someone on here paid £1,399 to spin the warranty on an M4 right up to four years when they purchased the car from a main dealer, so there may be an opportunity to do the same on an 8 Series - buy an extra three years' cover for a relitively good price if you do it when you buy the car.
I'm currently looking for an F32 440i. Some of them have cameras in each end of the front bumper - a godsend when trying to extricate yourself from a parking space next to an SUV. I was wondering if the 8 Series has anything similar as it's not obvious from the spec when I've been looking at them.

I've got the convertible 840i after previously owning an 840d coupe. Have been very pleased with them both, the 8-series is a wonderful car. The B58 suits it really well with decent performance, economy almost as good as the diesel and a smooth drive. I love the looks and how rare they are.
Regarding the seats, are these the optional ones you're thinking of? They're very difficult to find and I think only became available late 2019/ 2020 as they weren't offered at launch.

Factory colour, think it was an option, not from the individual pallette at the time, it's available on the X range too, I love it. had it on an M4 courtesy car when mine went in for some front end work. Love it and got a lot of positive attention, but I think on an 8, it's a step too farMitchT said:

That warranty quote is scary. Will need to double check as that amount is a real deal-breaker for me as running one without a warranty is scary. The fact that the quote is so high tells the story that these things break often, and when they do, they go wrong badly. On the subject of warranties... Absolutely the ones. Love those seats, they just look the business. Good to know they're 2019 onwards. Regarding the seats, are these the optional ones you're thinking of? They're very difficult to find and I think only became available late 2019/ 2020 as they weren't offered at launch.
Am keeping an eye on these cars. They're dropping hard, especially now the LCI has been released. My PCP is up in June, so have some time, but as time passes, am talking myself into just paying off the F82, add the M Performance kit and call it a day
