B58 oil filter disintegration
Discussion
I have read various reports of the oil filters of B58 engines disintegrating. I would be very garteful if somebody could enlighten me as to the current status of this problem. If it still exists I would like to get it sorted before the warranty on my 2021 build car expires later this year.
TIA
TIA
They don’t just disintegrate in use. There have been instances of the cylindrical filter breaking into 2 parts and leaving part of the filter stuck in its housing when being changed during an oil service.
There’s not much you or your warranty can do till it happens which (I think) is fairly rare. I haven’t had a problem so far and I’d fight very hard for a dealer/warranty/BMW to rectify it FOC if it does ever happen.

It was the OEM BMW filters at fault wasn't it?There’s not much you or your warranty can do till it happens which (I think) is fairly rare. I haven’t had a problem so far and I’d fight very hard for a dealer/warranty/BMW to rectify it FOC if it does ever happen.

This …. I get my oil changed every 12 months (so five times now) and it’s not happened to mine (as far as I know!)There’s not much you or your warranty can do till it happens which (I think) is fairly rare. Thanks for the responses.
I did some more searching and came across this two-part video which shows what the problem is. Unfortunately it seems that it's still a matter of luck whether or not the filter breaks. I would have expected BMW to have come up with a fix by now.

Yeah; that's mentioned a lot on the Bimmerpost forums (a wealth of knowledge on there etc; worth a look)I did some more searching and came across this two-part video which shows what the problem is. Ass aid it was the OEM BMW filters that were at fault; some made by Mahle and the other Hengst I think it was what my pal said; but they used Mann/Hengst & Mahle filters and haven't had any issues, at all...
No idea if it was a manufacturing fault or fitment fault etc; think the bottoms dropped off them in some examples leaving a pile of cack in the filter housing!

In the second video he shows a Mahle one that's worse than the OEM one. He also said that someone else had found out that Mann and OEM are made by the same company in Tunisia.Ass aid it was the OEM BMW filters that were at fault; some made by Mahle and the other Hengst I think it was what my pal said; but they used Mann/Hengst & Mahle filters and haven't had any issues, at all...

I haven't seen a recent post about it at all TBH - then again I've not looked either

Is there an easy visual check that you can do to establish what type is fitted? I'm looking for an F32 440i and would like to quickly establish if a car has the affected component so I can swap it out as a preventative measure.
Just swap it anyway, filters are about a tenner and easily accessible. Job done in 5mins. PistonHead007 said:

Thanks. I know sod all about cars beyond the usual stuff like bulbs, fluids and typre pressures, so I had no idea it would be that easy. Seems like something to just do periodically if there's even the tinyest chance of it failing and causing a larger problem.MitchT said:

Shame the B58s don't have a dipstick like the diesels do; drain it via that then with a Pela pump etc

No. Have you not bought one yet?? How LONG have you been looking now? MarkJS said:

I started gathering information around late summer 2022. Ducks were in a row financially by early 2023. Saw the perfect car but a nine hour round trip, weeks of train chaos and someone else beating me to it thwarted that one. Things have been a little lean on the Snapper Rocks Blue 440i front ever since. There are a couple of BMW AUC examples currently that tick most boxes, but one is on the pricey side on account of only having 8k miles and looks like it's been living on a farm judging by the amount of dirt and shrubbery tucked into its nooks and crannies, while the other is in Northern Ireland while I'm in West Yorkshire. I'm in no great rush anyway.MitchT said:

If it’s going to fail it fails when it gets changed. It’s the action of taking it out that causes it to fail.Gassing Station | BMW General | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
