My mother in law has a 2016 X1 2.0 diesel X drive.

She is going to change it but wants it to be right before she sells it, so asked me to take a look as it has the engine light on.

It has the following codes showing when I plug my OBD tool in.

P0546 - Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor Bank - Circuit High Bank 1

P00BC - Mass or Volume Air Flow A Circuit Range/ Performance - Air flow too low

P2243 - 02 Sensor Reference Voltage Circuit/Open Bank 1 Sensor 1

Its done just short of 40k in almost 8 years, so may be a lack of use has contributed.

Worth trying fitting a Lambda sensor and see if it sorts it or is there more to it ?

I'd double check the battery voltages first

If it's the original battery; it's probably due for a change

Low voltages can cause weird errors on these cars etc

Are the codes fresh as well; or old/stored etc?

Clear them, drive it for 10 miles then see what comes back.

My cheapy scan tool wont clear the codes, says not supported, will check the battery voltage.

I know what she will do, put four tyres, new bakes on and get all this sorted at BMW, spend maybe 2/3 grand, then part ex it and get like 10.

What tool do you use? Maybe an interesting new topic to share knowledge.

As above; what is it you're using?

I've got the Creator C410 code reader off Amazon UK, c£60 and it's a superb little device, will register the battery to your car as well as showing some live data also. Well worth the investment

I've got an Autel AP200, and it's paid for itself back and more numerous times over (although it was only £60) The slight snag is you get one manufacturer "free" but then additional ones are £20 a year. It can also do things like force regens, and register a new battery (which given what Dan has said you will need to do if you stick a battery on it!)

ETA Apologies Dan I've just seen you mention another one that can do battery coding!

Has it had the BMW recall for the EGR ? I take it none of them clear ?

We have a newer Mini that comes into the workshop that has those 3 codes, we suspect its the EGR valve - BMW are cheapest for it. But you can clear them and it takes a few weeks to come back.

Will look into the EGR, she is away for a week so we have the car and I noticed it was a little slow to crank last night so could be battery.

She will need to take it in I think, not replacing the battery, sensors or whatever, just more a case of narrowing it down a bit so have some idea of what’s up.

I would very much doubt the battery will cause the egr fault.

If it was me I'd sell it as is, it's of no benefit to your mother to 'make it right' before sale and she may as well set fire to £20 notes.

Well, the warnings got more insistent, I took it in to a garage I use, they tried a Lambda sensor, turns out it was the turbo, so over three grand to sort out.

47k miles ffs.

Is it in extended warranty by any chance?

We kept our identical X1 in warranty for 7yrs/102k miles (until sale) during which it had £15k's worth of free warranty work including £10k for a diesel sensor leak. Diesel everywhere including the ECUs, wiring loom, whole engine bay.

Have you checked if she extended hers?

Getting worried now smile

Our 65 reg X1 18d S Drive has been 100% reliable for the last 3 years and 35k miles.

Only a matter of time?

Planning on keeping it until it dies.
It's on 93k miles.

BMW extended comprehensive warranty available to 10yrs/100k miles. Apply online. 30 day exclusion period from sign up. After 10yrs/100k, Driveline warranty can still be taken with reduced cover.
