Hey all, new to the forum.

I've had the MHT one for a few months. Brilliant car but not getting anywhere near the mpg others have been getting sadly. Most of the journeys have been local so that might be one of the reasons.

So last couple of months:

October total trips 78 and total distance 530 miles (about 250 miles motorway/dual carriageway)
27 mpg

November total trips 71 and total distance 222 miles
20.4 mpg

December total trips 19 and total distance 58 miles
19.6

Filled up the tank nearly 2 weeks ago around £80. I've done about 140 miles and its showing about 120 miles, which is not great.
I hardly put my foot down and most of the time its in comfort.

I know were are in December but looking through the forums a lot of people on here are getting much better mpg.
Any thoughts?

Hi, adding that up your only averaging about 5 miles per journey,is that your situation?

If so you will always have low mpg

My bold

You're basically driving it around the corner on each trip. It's probably not even getting warm, unless you're in standing traffic for those 3 miles, which in itself is a reason for poor mpg.

What mpg were you expecting?

It sounds that you are using an M340i as a city car - lots of very short journeys. Yes the economy will be pretty awful, it's quite a heavy car, the engine is big and takes time to warm up.

At the other extreme, take it on a pan-european roadtrip and you'll probably get 45-50 mpg out of it.

Yeah at the moment main use is school runs. It's fairly close about 3 miles there and 3 on the way back and the same when its pick up time. So around 12-14 miles per day.

Sounds about right I guess. The car is pretty much warmed up when I'm heading back home.
I was expecting around mid 20's Getting around 220-230 miles from a full tank feels a bit st lol

Interesting as I would have thought the MHT would have helped on those short runs, I have a 730d MHT and can get 45mpg from a cold start and 3 mile journey if I nip to the shops, I know that's a diesel but they are meant to be very poor on cold short hops but aren't these days.

Of course you maybe driving up a 3 mile hill but those figures remind me of my old F10 M5.

Wow that's pretty impressive for a 730d MHT

Had my 2022 MHT M340i since September and I’m averaging 35mpg. Granted I’m doing longer trips though. For a 3.0 petrol I find the fuel economy pretty impressive.

On a F36 440i, I get 280 to a tank of mostly city driving. The all time car average is 26 mpg presumably because of a couple of European road trips (I’d get more like 450 miles to a tank then) and the odd 100 mile journey once every few months.

My missus has a x3 m40i, drives 70 miles per day, three times per week and her fill up range is always 450.

My non mht averages 17mpg as mainly round town.
Really???

My F10 M5 averages 17.9 with mostly town driving, I can't believe an M340i is worse on fuel than that.

Are you sure there's not something wrong with it?

My X3 MHT does 58.6 on long runs according to the app it tells you how many miles you coasted on the trip etc etc, even normal running round town it’s 40mpg. As been said petrol or diesel they have to warm up before they are effective

Yeah, with those sort of mileages does it matter?

Not trying to be an arse, but when doing such low mileage does it matter?

£65,000 car that is going to lose around £30-35,000 over the next 3 years, so close to £1000 per month, then add in insurance, servicing and tyres is the difference between it getting say 22mpg and 32mpg, so roughly £30 a month difference in fuel cost, really worth worrying about?

All I am trying to a say is, enjoy the thing.

I do 30,000 miles a year and fuel is a big cost, but nothing compared to the other costs of owning a new car, and the difference between 5 or even 10mpg is no where near as big as you think.

I’ve got an F31 340i - so same engine minus the mild hybrid stuff.

In the last 2.5 years its claimed average is 25.7 mpg. Around 50% of that is similar usage to you, the rest is either hard driven A roads or longer road trips (where the average is mid 30s).

Have to say it seems a touch low, but not drastically slow. The B58 party trick is amazing mpg in 8th gear at a steady 70/80 mph cruise. Under load it drinks a fair bit.

Not exactly the same but somewhat similar-ish.

I do mainly short journeys like yourself in my 2014 M235i.

I get 22mpg...... Normal. Even when I had a banger 2.0 TDCi mondeo I'd only get about 30-35mpg on my usual commute which is only a few miles each way.

Such short journeys, big engine, low mpg.

Will be knocking on the door of 40mpg on long runs.

I've never really had cars that do much more than 25mpg.... Life's too short!

We’ve got a M340i Touring on the fleet, MHT, 72 plate

School run type journeys it will get about 22mpg

50 miles down the motorway at 70mph = about 39mpg

80 miles on the m56/m60/country lane a roads last week at a bit faster than it should have been = 30mpg

Overall, after 15000 miles the long term average is 33mpg

This is my M140i stats, a much lighter car with the older Gen 1 B58 so less efficient. My commute to the office once per week is 98 miles each way, rest of my journeys are relatively short.

Around town doing short journeys its not great and MPG plummets. Our M4 though is consistent 24 to 27 Mpg how ever we drive it.
