To x drive or not
Discussion
If you don't care about the disadvantages then why ask the question??
A friend has a 330d X drive. He's manically obsessed about balancing tyre wear, changing all 4 tyres at the same time, differential stress due to uneven tyre wear. You could do this or I suspect, just get one and drive it and have a life.
I imagine the xdrive will be a boon when towing regardless of the tyres

I think for towing or living out in the sticks etc; xDrive makes a lot of sense
I really liked the 330D xDrive we test drove; yes I'd have changed the springs for something firmer, but that's my preference etc
Other than that; they're an excellent car
However the RWD suits me to a tee as I don't tow or anything like that

They do grip loads better, especially the diesels where you have loads of torque.
I like the grip but hate the suspension set up.
F30 LCI 335d x drive here. Great low down torque, great grip on the wet. We dont get much ice or snow - a bit frosty this week, but summer tyres all-round are fine for me. I have run-flats and the SE (standard) suspension. I am fine with that, but it depends how good your roads are, I guess).I like the grip but hate the suspension set up.

Roads around here are fine, I’d stick all seasons on anyway. There was a 330d non x drive that appeared, great spec ( merino leather, pan roof etc) but it’s gone now. Preference was always for x drive as I preferred the softer suspension and think it will be better for towing, it also allows a little extra to be towed.Another F31 335d here on runflats and LCI SE suspension.
We have a couple of awkward angle, uphill give ways on blind bends by us. Our E91 330d always triggers the traction control in evenly mildly damp weather, no matter how light on the throttle just due to odd nature of the junction. 335d just pulls away up it with no fuss. Noted that's a specific couple of junctions, but it is very sure footed in general.

I've had a 340i as a 2 wheel drive and various (330d, 335d) diesels on x drive. I missed the x drive on the 340, it was difficult to get the power down sometimes. I ran all of them on winter tyres in the alps and had no problem with any on the snow although the x drive was better. I never had a problem with the suspension on any of them and dont recall if feeling different between x drive and non x drive.
Make of that what you will.
