E36 M3 speaker upgrade

I have just purchased a very fine low mileage E36 M3 but the factory speakers leave a little to be deisired!
Can anyone suggest an upgrade that will not blow my head off and will not be obvious or 'max powered'. I intend to get an alpine head unit which accomadtes an ipod and want to run four quality speakers off it preferably without an amp. I am open to a mild front door build if necessary.

Any suggestions please?
