Hello all - experienced DIYer but new to BMW world, struggling to make head nor tail of all the various software diagnostic options available. I've seen various dead links or very obviously dodgy looking software rip offs, and theres obviously mountains of chinese tat hardware on ebay/amazon.

My recently purchased Z4M has dreadful brake pedal feel despite lots of old fashioned pressure bleeding in both directions. Combined with some unusual lingering ABS system codes I suspect the ABS/DSC unit has been (badly) replaced at some point and not been properly bled through.

I have an old Windows 7 laptop I can use (nothing newer available). Can someone definitively tell me what I need to buy in order to carry out a proper ABS/DSC unit bleed? Happy to pay a few quid for something actually tested/proven/legit and not liable to brick my car and/or my laptop!

I suspect anything phone/android based is a bit too toy-town for this kind of procedure, unless anyone knows otherwise.

(I would also like to be able to code out the Secondary Air Inejction pump is thats possible too).

Many thanks.

Someone on z4-forum.com or zroadster.org may be able to point you in the right direction...and may even be able to offer the service for you if you're local to one of the members or the 'zed sheds'.

I can't help further as I only do simple stuff with Carly on the Z4 and Bimmercode on the F31.

You might be able to do it with the phone apps, but my preference is always the proper BMW tools if you have the wherewithal to operate them.

BMW standard tools will run fine on Windows 7.

There are countless places you can find them for free. A quick search came up with the below, then you just need a K/D-CAN USB cable. Any of the cheapo cables will probably be fine if you're not reprogramming (ie flashing, not coding) modules.

Edit: It seems that the link to download the software no longer works on the above page, but you'll find it easily enough, and the instructions are still useful

IIRC ISTA is what you need; can't remember if Bimmerlink/Bimmercode offer that option

A decent hand held diagnostics scanner will do it, I know my motorsport mechanic pal's does just that as used it on a few previous E39s when we did a full brakes and fluid overhaul etc

If you want ISTA, speak to Jimmy @ Cableshack: cable-shack.co.uk
