Sorry for the somewhat vague info but I am trying to help out a friend and the details I have got from him are a bit patchy….

The basic story is that his 2019 M5 got nicked and recovered. Insurance company paid out but he was able to buy back the salvage for a lot less than they had paid him out.

The problem is that in the course of nicking it, the thieves have ripped something out that now means it won’t start. (No, not the battery ). He has been told it relates to a built in system which makes the car trackable and that the thieves know this and therefore they rip it out as a matter of course every time they nick one. And now it won’t start. He has tried BMW dealers and they want nothing to do with it and he can’t find an indy willing to take it on as a non runner.

Does anyone have any suggestions of what to do or where to take it or what the problem is most likely to be? I have told him I’m happy to have a go at fixing it but I don’t know where to start with this one. Any sensible suggestions would be appreciated.
TIA.

Where is the car? A good start would be getting it scanned to see what modules flag as missing.

They will be referring to the telematics control unit. Google it to find where it should be on that model.

How did it end up getting recovered? How was it stolen?

If it was stolen without keys it might just be that his keys have been removed from the ignition memory
