I wonder if they are ever going to solve this problem once and for all?

To me it seems that there liability on the 15 year warranty could be quite substantial..

I've had the recall letter for the new software install for a while now, I was going to wait until the next service after Christmas sometime, I'm getting quite fed up of taking it in all the time for the same issue.
I wonder if a remap with a EGR delete would solve the issue once & for all ?

I think they've done a change in the past. More recently a software patch which seems to have increased the alerting, and planning to do another EGR change in the future....

Seems this is a never ending problem…

October 2023 my car went in for two recalls - change of drivers airbag & the EGR change.

As with others on the forum, this is possibly the third EGR recall the car has been in for.

The week before it went in, I called the dealership to ensure that parts were available to carry out the work, on the basis that it’s hugely inconvenient to leave the car with them for the day & I didn’t want to mess up my work diary if parts weren’t available.

Car went in & when I picked up I was advised airbag recall done but EGR was only checked not changed as didn’t need it. Not overly happy as was advised the part would be changed.

Less than 6 weeks later in November letter arrived from BMW advising that EGR valve needed to be changed.

So, I booked it in for tomorrow on basis that service was required at this time, thus minimising the amount of time it goes back to dealership, getting to be a royal pain in the arse now.

Car booked in for service & EGR work for over 2 months, yet yesterday get phone call from dealership advising no EGR’s in stock & basically they want to rebook the work including service for 6-8 weeks down the line when parts become available, but no guarantee of timescales.

Car will then be overdue a service which I’m really not happy about - I’m fastidious with regards to getting services done on time. They say they can carry out the service & check the EGR valve, but if it’s leaking the car will have to stay at dealership until parts sourced, again no timescales given.

Stuck between a rock & a hard place - take it in & risk it being impounded at dealership or wait for some unknown date in the future for it to be sorted including the service, which will be late.

This really is unacceptable, how have others responded?

I am getting increasingly furious with the EGR issues on my 2020 G31 530d

Its been in a number of times for tweaks and for the last service they wanted it all day to deal with it - great I naively thought - however this was just some kind of inspection and I still dont know when they will actually fix it. Were it just a service Id have waited and done some work drinking "free" coffee but this option was denied meaning 2 trips to the dealer

The flip side is that outside of this forum Im a nice person and so the service manager has always given me his tasty company car in lieu of a 3 cylinder Mini I have to insure myself which I generally return with a lot less tread on the tyres than if it was my own

NOT GOOD ENOUGH...... even if I enjoy the hooning

Since this thread got created the cars software flagged the beginning of a leak. BMW collected it a few days later and replaced the EGR cooler (again). They did suggest that they would charge to pick up but quickly changed their mind.

My colleague has a 330D which has had it's Cooler replaced a couple of times. It went again at the weekend and melted the manifold. Now with BMW who did not take much pushing at all to deal with the issue.

you probably need to push our dealer a bit harder for the part to arrive. an Emergency order might assist BMW in expediting the part. If others have been able to get the same part fitted in a much shorter time frame then my guess is that the order has been placed as a 'stock' order and as such it'll be pushed to the back of the queue if everyone else is placing orders as emergency.

Equally, whilst it is frustrating to be without your car for extended periods, if the dealer has it, then they'll have to provide you with a loan car, which longer term will probably be swapped for a BMW UK loan car. That cost BMW money and as such will create some interest in getting the part to your dealer. You should also raise a complaint to BMW CS about the time taken to get a part, however that would be best done if your dealer has the car, and you have one of BMWs loaners.

Bit of an update for those that are interested.

Reluctantly took my car in for the service today, on basis that I was keeping everything crossed that when they inspected the EGR cooler it would be ok.

Before I took it in, I phoned BMW customer care, just to ensure that what I was being told was correct & also to see if they had any further information about stock availability etc. Customer care put me on hold & contacted dealership, but in effect came back with the same explanation - no parts, unable to advise when parts likely to be received, car would be checked but if found that EGR leaking then car would have to stay with them.

So car went in & EGR cooler inspected & CHANGED!!! Which was completely unexpected. I asked the service desk about the previous calls / conversations I’d had about fact that I had been explicitly told that no parts available & no convincing answer provided.

I’ve got my own thoughts on this, but feel like I’ve been fed a load of BS but really don’t understand why… At least it’s sorted for now & it hasn’t impacted my service history which was the one thing I was concerned about.

Mine is booked in for a service next Friday

The 2nd EGR recall is still outstanding so when i booked it in a month ago i asked if they could also do the recall.

"Yes Sir of course not a problem" then to be told 10 mins later "oh we don't have the parts, don't know when we will have any so cant do the recall at the same time

I thought mine was going to be replaced this week (mini Sd B47 ) booked in for a day. Only on collection did I realise it was just another inspection banghead

Has anybody actually had this work done yet?
to replace original oem part numbers 11718515891 or 11718476971
Does anyone know the new part number ?

Are any “new parts” in the UK if not has anyone been given an ETA
last August I was told early spring, now it’s been suggested mid summer 2024 ?
are newly built cars getting priority on parts, if there is accident damage, I’m assuming that the factory has the parts for new builds?

my car hasn’t been the same since both the software patches, I’m eager to get it sorted soon or go back to petrol.

Apparently, confirmed by BMW customer care, they are only changing the EGR coolers on a priority basis, in other words they will change it when the inspect it & it’s showing a problem. If they haven’t got the parts then they will want to retain the car.

If they inspect & it’s not showing any issues, the expectation is that you’re sent away & have to have it checked again at the next visit, which may or may not result in your car being ‘impounded’ if they haven’t got parts.

Understand the position around ‘priority’ however it’s not very customer centric is it?!? Basically, we’ll keep inconveniencing you until we’re in a position to provide a part to replace a sub standard part that was fitted in the meantime.

I’m looking to change my car over the next 18 months, but I certainly won’t be getting another BMW. Poor situation made much worse by lack of transparency & blatant BS with complete disregard for the client.

I would disagree, they can’t get the parts are workshop space to do them all immediately.

They did install software to monitor symptoms. If this catches a leak developing they replace it. And have the parts supply to do it, rather than swapping perfectly fine coolers and running out of one’s to swap when they go leeky.

My 330d has had two EGR coolers, there is a local company that specialise in removing the EGR and coding it out. From the forums you get better mpg once this is done anyway.

Emailed BMW with my reg, vin number asking for an update on the EGR issue, got a lovely email back stating my car wasn’t on the system with me as the owner, I’d need to send photos of pages 2 and 3 of the V5! I replied how did the contact me by mail to inform me of the ongoing issue and to book my car into my local BMW dealer’s? We get your details as owner from the DVLA! So they write to me telling me about an issue with a car they know belongs to me at my address but won’t update the system which they have until I send photos of my V5? Cars been in 3 times for EGR updates with my local dealer, the customer care team at the call centre are great at not answering questions!!
