Have an e61 535d LCI, fully stock and have become quite accustomed to it and thinking of a remap. I'm tempted to go full stage 2 with DPF delete and custom exhaust but wondering what people recommend if it's better to do stage 1 then 2 when the time is right.

Also any places people would recommend for the remap?

BW chip tune are usually recommended, although i'd leave the DPF in.

Strangely enough so am I.. Having just purchased an E61 LCI that appears to be completely stock.. Its just at the bodyshop having some minor paintwork corrections... Cannot wait to start 'putting my stamp on it' They still look so fresh and its wonderful to drive...

Its my 2nd 535D E61... the last was a pre lci 06 plate that I never got over selling.. They get under your skin something rotten. Cracking cars.

Personally I'd go stage one to begin with; learn what that does to the car and how it feels. It'll more than likely be more than enough

Get a decent company to do it; that actually fettle it there on a rolling road rather than a plug n play set up etc

I still have one in the family > 9 years now. It has a stage 1 'Eco' tune, circa 330bhp. Whilst in standard trim it's not laggy, mid range definitely feels more punchy, vmax is also removed just in case you're planning a trip to Germany. It also stage 2 xHP gearbox update, which is well worth considering. Makes the gearbox far less dimwitted and removes the clunking.

The DPF shouldn't be an issue, I believe the Cat location was moved closer on the LCI to cure any potential issues on those parts.

Mine was done by a local tuner, they download off the car, this is sent to one of the specialst software writing companies, sent back within the hour and uploaded. Rolling road may give an extra few %, but depends on the kit, the operator and how cool they can keep the car.

Dyno is the gold standard, although completely pointless for this car, but are great to watch/hear when the inlet and turbos glow.

I love it, I did recently toy with the idea of selling for something else but nothing seemed to tick as many boxes, especially given the work I have done to fix most of the common faults.

A few runs in sport mode has proved there is more than enough performance for what I need.

I'll give BW Chip Tune a shout see what they offer.

I was under the assumption a stage 2 would need DPF and EGR removal?

Not sure. I just wanted a bit more mid-range/better gearbox response as I always use that car to tow the trailer for trackdays.

I definitely like to have the gearbox flashed to make a bit smoother, not something I had thought about.

I think stage 1 with a gearbox and exhaust sounds like a good start.

I'd prefer a rolling road setup rather than just a software flash, more so to check the car is in good health before starting.

Bigdom- what was the local company please? Would you recommend them?

I just found a guy close to me in Surrey - https://www.revolverremaps.com/

I'd normally use my mate, but he was on a sabbatical. I've had no issues on either, both been on there for 12 months now. If there's no issues at the moment, you're unlikely to see any as only around 10% uplift in power.

Back in the day, when I was swapping out green/blue/greys on a Cosworth, definite need to check things over, things used to go bang a lot then!

I remapped my LCI 530d - It was much better afterwards, highly recommend.

A friend had the same tune, but with the DPF delete too - I couldn't tell any difference whatsoever in seat, I drove it too. Felt the same as mine.

DPF removal has its own complications, possibly failure at MOT time, technically, insurance may be invalid too as not road legal = not insured.

TCU remap - Get the gearbox oil and filter changed first, if it hasn't been done, mine was night and day different after it. Had mine done at 100k.

It had a gearbox service just before I bought it but I think I will do get the oil and filter changed again before I go for a remap.

I think I will keep it sensible first, Stage 1, gearbox and maybe an exhaust.

In sport mode its loads of fun so I don't want to go to wild with it right away.

Where are you based?

I had my E92 335i remapped in April (stage one plus as it’s also running a bigger intercooler). It’s certainly woken the engine up and breathed a new lease of life into the car for me.

I had he gearbox done at the same time.

Simon at e-maps has a great reputation & knows these engines very well; plenty of testimonials online.

My E92 335D and 640D ran his maps........both excellent.....zero issues. Reasonably priced and a quality service ( Simon comes to you )
