640D to which X5?
Discussion
Hello all.
have recently changed job which means i will now for 95% of the time be working from home.
the 640d will barely be used and insurance and maintenance due soon its time to change
insurance has now gone from £700 to £1184 (cheapest quote). the car also needs 4 x new tyres all round very soon. another £1k plus.
i have been looking at X5 - mainly the 4.4 50i version as i want a v8 and they are around the 15k mark.
anything to look out for? or any other recommendations?
SUV
Petrol - maybe 5k max per year if that
big engine
reliable ISH.
thankyou for any ideas.

If that's the N63 I'd have a look at all the ways it goes wrong, and then buy something else.
I believe later versions of the engine got more reliable over time, but my 2010 550i had endless fuel delivery problems, and after replacing most of the fuel system (thankfully under warranty) the injectors started to fail, and at 300 quid each that was enough for me to sell it. That was all before 55k and with full BMW service history.
It also drank a litre of oil every 1,800 miles, which is apparently normal even when there's nothing wrong with it.
It was a lovely engine when it worked, but I wouldn't have another one and there's definitely no way I'd run one without a warranty.

I have no SUV experience to contribute, but the only other V8 I've had is the M157 in my E63, and that's done 6k ish a year for me for three years with no unwanted drama. I don't know if you'll get an ML63 (or whatever it was called after) in budget, but maybe there's an ML500 or something with a slightly calmer V8.
Just has a quick look and the later car is the GL, there's barely any GL500s full stop
In the MLs, there's no 5.5 ML63s in budget, but you could have the 6.2, which kind of makes sense if you're thinking last chance for a V8, go big (literally) or go home kind of thing. If I was inclined to buy a 15k SUV that's what I'd do. There's probably an equivalent Audi Q something too.
