Not quite the same but I had an auto m240, 2016 version whichever E or F number that was.
I thought the auto box was great, particularly in sport and was the first auto I had had for some years. I am guessing they sold many more autos than manuals.
But perhaps as he is younger, a manual may be more fun for him.
What does he think?
Auto probably easier to sell on in the future if that was a concern.

Our M240i is insured with Aviva along with our other two cars and in total was around £1100 for the three. We live in Suffolk.
However, a friend of mine who is 63 and lives in NW London was getting quotes of £2500 for a M140i. Very much depends where you live as you can see. He didn't buy it.

Autos are infinitely more desirable, as is pronav. (I have a manual 140)
Engine in the 1/235 is lovely - chargepipes can fail, various gaskets and the motor really doesn't like people doing donuts.
Seemingly a lot of younger drivers are having to sell up as their premiums have gone through the roof but if you have a quote already then no surprises there.

That looks a cracking motor; good spec too by the looks of it...I test drove my pals 235i that he'd bought to then sell on (was a clients car that needed work they couldn't afford during lockdown etc) and it was a belting drive. Far too small for my fat arse
The ZF8 is a superb box and they're well thought of when remapped too (the box that is); that's something I'll be doing to my F31 early next year when it's out of BMW warranty etc
I'd say if he can get sensible insurance on it and the car is as it looks (due diligence undertaken, CarVertical checks etc) then why not! Hell of a great car for a young lad; better than the Ford Escort I had when I was 20/21 back in 1999
Just a quick update
He bought the white one, but it didn't pan out after 3 hours of ownership so he got a refund.
He had another one delivered yesterday and he's over the moon
