72 Plate X5 with Comfort Access Stolen
Discussion
Hi All
My neighbour has just had his 72 plate X5 stolen. We have CCTV of them arriving and driving off. It seems to take them about 10 minutes to get the car started and drive off. There was nothing left behind so no obvious forced entry and no car alarm activated. I assume the length of time is because the key was at the back of the house so not immediately available for a relay attack.
I was amazed the relay approach still worked with a modern BMW. Is it still an issue or have they figured out another way of stealing these cars?
What do owners do? I have seen faraday cages etc as being solutions.

I had thought that all recent BMWs had keys that turned off after a few minutes if the key isn't moved, making relay theft more unlikely? Possibly some exceptions to this, or alternatively the thieves had a more sophisticated way of stealing it.
I found that the best approach was to buy an X7 - judging by PHs response to the X7, no one in their right mind would try and steal it!
