I was in my local BMW dealer earlier this week and they had a couple of 8 series in the showroom. They look better in the metal than they do in photographs but I' still not sure if I like the shape or not..........From some angles they look great - long, low, and elegant but from other angles they look heavy and bloated. They certainly have presence probably due to their size.

Used prices currently start at around mid to high £30's. Not sure how long it will take for asking prices to dip below £30k but I'll be keeping a close eye on the market as an overall package I think they have a lot of appeal, particularly the 840i and 840d. The M850i and the M8 are too expensive to be worth the extra in my opinion.

Interestingly the 8 series is only around 100mm longer than the 4 series coupe.

I'd love an 840i but I ruled it out when I saw what the official BMW warranty costs...

I put the reg number of one that I'd found for sale into BMW's warranty quote page and it came back with £2,600! For comparison, the quote for an F32 440i was just over £700. If they've gathered a load of data and decided that they have to charge £2,600 to mitigate the cost of repairing them then clearly I can't afford to be without a warranty... but at that price I cant afford to be with one either! Or maybe they've just plucked a silly price out of the air because of the expensive image of the car.

The 840i has the generally reliable B58 engine, like the 440i so, in theory, it should just be the extra weight on suspension components and the extra tech that poses an additional threat to the wallet, so I don't get why the warranty costs so much more. A new 840i costs about 60% more than an F32 440i did new, yet the warranty is about 334% more!

I'd need to see evidence of positive long term ownership experiences to have the confidence to run one without a warranty, but that would be the only option at that price.

The £2,600 warranty cost would be a drop in the ocean compared to the hit on selling an AUC car after 1 year!

Over the warranty side part of it will because 8 series and the entire line up will be similar rated. That being said that is one hell of a sting.

My 640D warranty was give or take 1k a year. To put some humour the £2k+ cost is £700 higher than the warranty on my Aston! Hahahahahaah!

I checked the price for my nine year old low mileage 640i GC recently and it was £1200.

Warranty cost has put me off these as well. I just about got over the useless back seats (not suitable for even occasional use) and although not a particularly long car they are quite wide for UK roads.

When I started looking there was 190 840i coupe’s for sale on AT, now down to less than 100, clearly must be selling. Low £30k’s I might still consider one without warranty, £2600 per year is mental when Lexus give a warranty free with a very reasonably priced service!

My 640d GC is around £750, renewed last September. I wonder if all the prices have shot up recently. The 8 series cost is ridiculous.

My 640d GC is costing me just under £70 a month (£250 excess) where's my wife's X3 M40d with the same warranty would be under £50 a month but with a £100 excess. If I pay for the X3 M40 d as a one off payment then to works out at under £37 a month!

There certainly seems to be some big differences.

I've just come back to looking at an 840i as my personal car. Looks like you can get a 2021 model now for about 30k. They are fantastic looking cars. anyone have any experience in owning one? Interested to know if the diesel is also worth considering.

Spent an unhealthy amount of time looking at these earlier this year as I thought I wanted to swap out of an F82 M4 into an 840i.

They are VERY spec sensitive and all of the dealers will claim "high spec", but majority of them have no boxes ticked, i.e. lease-spec

For me, the must have was the alcantara headlining. this uplifts the cabin massively.

I wouldn't consider one without a heated wheel. Having had one, wouldn't go without one now.

The advance driving option was a 50/50. if the car stacked up, great, if not, then it was a deal-breaker.

I really liked the interiors with the crafted clarity controls, they were well worth hunting out for. IF you could get one, the bowers and wilkins audio is actually pretty cool

Deal breaker for me was the interior colour. Ivory interior was horrible, picked up stains and it came with the beige carpets. I never saw one without deep staining that even their valeters couldn't remvove.

Rocking horse poop was the M sport seats. Same seats as the M8. They were stunning, but only available as an option post 2022. In my time, I only saw one with those seats

Drive wise and looks wise, absolutely stunning. But in the end, I got a G82 M4 smile

I’ve a 840d. Use it for motorway miles. I’ll get 600 plus motorway miles easily.

It’s a great motorway cruiser, immense presence, loads of power. You do want lots of options. But it’s a big car, it does turn heads.
