Hi All,
Toying with the idea of picking up a 540i as a 2nd car. Looking for something with 5 doors, AWD, modern interior, decent level of luxury, sub £30k and from a premium marque. 540i ticks all the boxes....
I am looking at probably something around 2017/2018, and don't mind something with slightly higher mileage - say 50k ish - as it won't be driven much by me. Probably 3k miles a year I'd guess.
My question is - how reliable is the 540i, and more importantly would you bother paying a bit extra for an approved used with warranty etc?
I know there is an element of luck as to whether your car breaks or not, but typically are these seen as a money pit without a warranty (in the way that from experience a 5 year old Range Rover would likely be) or are they ones whereby if they've got service history you tend to not really go wrong?
With thanks!

Hello Simon800. I’ve had a Carbon Black 540i xDrive saloon for two years. It’s a high spec 2017 car. Bought from Sytner at 28,000 miles and now at 55,000. It’s a terrific car. Mine has the optional adaptive suspension and the ride quality is just astonishing. It’s a fairly quick car. And surprisingly it will do 40mpg on a steady run. A superb all-rounder.
My car did have a couple of issues in the first six months, which you could argue should not have occurred. In any case, BMW were very good. They covered the entire cost of one item, as a goodwill gesture, and then discounted the cost of the other issue. Excellent customer service.
I might actually be selling mine this summer. My circumstances have changed (in a good way), I’m doing way less miles, and I fancy another 911. Feel free to message me if you’re interested or indeed just want to ask me any general questions about ownership.

Thanks both for replies, much appreciated.
Having done a bit of further research I’m inclined to think one with a half decent warranty would offer some peace of mind….
I'd absolutely get BMW extended warranty; it's great peace of mind... Even if you only have it for the 1st year of ownership etc...Having done a bit of further research I’m inclined to think one with a half decent warranty would offer some peace of mind….
I sat in a new'ish 540i M Sport touring the other week at Bowker BMW whist waiting to collect my F31 from them after some warranty work; they're a superb car and one of the is my goal in a few years once we've paid the mortgage of
So all I can say is BUY ONE You'll not regret it
