Folks, can you please advise which front brake discs and pads for my 550i E60. I use the car as a general light / medium paced road car. Thanks

OEM spec discs and pads - no need for anything else

Jurid, Textar and ATE are OEM - you'll find them on Autodoc and if you're not desperate for them, they'll have more or less unbeatable prices

Decent fluid and braided lines (HEL) would be a good upgrade too; gives a much better brake feel

My preference would be for blank discs (ie not slotted or grooved) and ATE Ceramic pads

^^ But I'm deeply sceptical about this. I'd just use what the manufacturer fits/recommends.

Why?

A lot of manufacturers use braided lines from factory; all track cars use braided lines...

They're much better than aged OEM lines

I know OEM lines are cheap when new; but they still don't give you the firmer pedal feel that braided lines do, and you can feel what the brakes are doing more through the likes of HEL lines than OEM

But it's horses for courses and a personal choice

Really good info’ thank you. I was looking at auto doc but didn’t know which were OEM, my problem solved. My brakes have a slight shudder, previous owner did advise me of this, no urgency to change but it’s good to know what brand I should go for.

Unfortunately that's not always the brakes. Can be worn suspension components too (track rod ends, ball joints, arms etc)

All needs to be checked properly before you start splashing out...

Pad deposits on the discs can do this too. Some hard but dafe braking will usually clear them.

Sticking calipers, cheap/ badly worn pads and discs that have been fitted onto mating surfaces that haven't been cleaned thoroughly can cause similar problems as well...

As you can see, bit of a minefield

That’al teach me to buy a BMW, I will ask my lad to give it a once over for me, although it’s just gone through a clean MOT. Nonetheless some useful guidance, thanks.

Haha its not just BMWs that suffer with this...

To give you an idea. This was my previous 7 series... Brand new suspension all round but kept getting a shuddering when braking...

New discs, pads, lines, fluid etc...

Still there...

The only bits that I didn't fit were the 4month old thrust arms...

https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

The ball joints had failed but passed it's MOT a week before I did this work. Couldn't be seen until removed and if you click on the link, you'll see how shagged they were!

That was causing the braking shudder...

I can't think of any car manufacturers who fit braided brake lines.
