I've got a really lovely 2016 66 plate 535D M Sport Touring, faultless in every way. Not our primary car, does very low mileage, and I look after it it terms of oil changes, air/pollen filters etc as that is all it needs

It's subject to the dreaded EGR cooler recall and is booked in with the local BMW dealer early March

I've had no dealings with them and just booked it in, but it transpires that a neighbour had shocking service from them, and having now looked at their online reviews it's all pretty grim. Other nearest BMW dealer receives similar poor reviews and a so a lesser of two evils

I appreciate that people are far more likely to write reviews of a negative experience than a good one, but a further look around the 'net indicates quite a few people with excellent, no problem cars, then experiencing problems directly attributable to poor dealer fitment of this widely recalled part

Some positivity from others whom have had it completed would be greatly appreciated, but any horror stories must also be told....What can you tell me ?

There were two recalls on my F30 ‘66 plate 335d.
I don’t know the issues for the recalls, in details, or why there were two. I returned mine to the dealer I bought the car from. No issues, apart from the usual inconvenience. Didn’t feel different afterwards.

I purchased a 2016 F31 335d a few weeks ago that had the recall outstanding.

Booked in with my local dealer (Westerley Exeter) last week - the work appears to have been carried out absolutely fine as you'd hope and expect.
However the customer service experience was certainly not 5* which is what the note at the reception desk claims to offercensored

As a bonus the technician did a complimentary video VHC which they emailed across after I left - it didn't highlight anything that I didn't already know about (discs/pads) but as the car is new to me it is essentially unknown to me mechanically until I get it on a ramp at my trusted local garage in a couple of weeks.

In talking to the service chap, the reason there has been more than one EGR recall is because the original modified part didn't rectify the original issue, hence another modified part and another recall.

Thanks for the comments PP and Chris, that does inspire a little confidence. I'm not totally cynical about main dealers, and indeed rarely use them, but did have some pretty poor service from some of them many years ago (actually Jaguar, and then Land Rover) I do avoid them like the plague and for work I cannot do myself, I'll always used a trusted specialist

Anyway, this EGR cooler is a safety recall and there is no option but to have it completed. Sure it'll be fine smile

I got a BMW Connecteddrive Booster voucher given to me for free when I recently had the EGR recall completed. Just needed to download the app and go onto the website to register - it gives me a few little features including live traffic info. A nice touch.

Ask your dealer about it if you're getting this EGR work done.

I think I got a free loan car. But really, that’s how it should be.

Had the 2 EGR recalls done by my local dealer. No complaints with the work done. Free health check with video and a complimentary clean inside and out. Service office/desk staff were quite useless though. Customers complaining about where their cars were and the time taken to get their cars back when called to come and pick it up. Staff looked busy doing nothing strangely.

I always take mine to an independent to be honest and nothing about my last visit to BMW will change that.

Mine was a headache of an experience, parts were backordered at the time so they put me in an insignia auto for 5-6 weeks. I had a 640d with the same engine.

Recall part fitted, couple of hundred miles later loss of coolant. Dealer was useless, I took the car to them as it ran fine before that. Wanted £6 or £700 from memory to change a small plastic thermostat housing or similar part connected To the engine. I declined and took it to a specialist to go fit the genuine part for £150 Labour. He commented the car was not out back together very well after the recall job and the broken part could well have been from result of the egr cooler work. I can’t tell for certain obviously but it ran for 40k moles like a dream until the dealer touched it. I’ve never been back to them. Bmw leeds

Specialist gets all my work now.

THIS is potentially what I dread. My car runs beautifully with no issues, and I'd prefer for it not to be touched. I'm 25 miles from the nearest BMW dealer and it's going to be a massive amount of aggravation, not to say annoyance if problems result from this..

I think it's disgraceful that any of us should even have to doubt the competency of any franchised dealer, but experience dictates that perhaps we should..

Reality is that some techs are better than others, and to some extent one is in the lap of the gods as to who works on your car. Not like that with my local garage at all, just proper, capable, competent mechanics who do the job right each and every time...

Anyway, it has to have it, and I'll keep my fingers crossed

I have mine booked in for the EGR recall in March, just had another recall letter in today for replacement of drivers airbag “ may deploy with too much explosive force…… it has the potential to fatality or seriously injure vehicle occupants”

States not to contact BMW until second letter but going to call and see if they can pre empt and book in for both, unlikely but have a 4hr round trip to the garage so 1 trip would be better.

Had it 8 years,160k and no issues to date……….

Airbag recall is live and active now - can be verified by entering the VIN here - https://www.bmw.co.uk/en/footer/quick-links/bmw-ve...

Mine is booked in next week, didn't receive any letter but was notified whilst at the dealer for another reason.

Absolutely agree with this, my EGR recall booked in with my local BMW dealer, appointment time 8am leave the car with them for the day etc. Took the car down there and at 8.20am I stood outside calling the many people I could see behind the service desk, one finally picked up and I asked if they would open the doors so the customers outside could carry on with their day! No apology when the doors were finally opened, it took me another 20 mins to actually leave the keys and all the contact information they required (they had all this from the recall letter!) They should have a T on the end of BMW so it stands for Bl**dy More Wasted Time!!!

Anything coming up on the VIN checker?

I believe it is model year specific, so it may not be. A friends MY16 F11 also doesn't show anything.

Greetings from Liverpool - fairly sure I've seen your Z4MC around and about..

Tried both the reg and VIN.

Have already had the latest EGR recall though.

It does put you off using the dealer. Using a specialist who actually owns the business is best especially if the car is out of warranty. Most parts you can source OEM anyway.

Do you mean <=2014, as 2015>2014?

However, how would an owner know what year's the recall is valid for when BMW doesn't stipulate it...or send recall emails/letters despite buying directly from a BMW franchised dealer?

I've only found out about the last 2 EGR recalls due to posts on here (and another BMW forum).
