Hello all

any idea how to get the bonnet open?

pulling the lever only opens up the drivers side so i assume the cable is snapped / lose

thanks

Have you double pulled the lever?

As SC says. Pull the release lever twice. I spent ages fiddling around and cursing BMW trying to open the bonnet to top up washer fluid. Pulled the lever again and Voila ! smile

My bonnet release handle even has “x2” printed on it.

Single pull on the in car lever followed by move the latch at the front of the bonnet ( latch moves left to right ) . 640D is a "F" series . I thought the double pull was on much more modern cars ??

Charlie, you are correct it does have a latch - I could have sworn the 6 series was a double pull too, though in fairness mine was a decade ago!

I can see some F series (e.g. Xs) did have double pull though.

Does the bonnet 'pop' slightly on the first pull?

Had a similar issue on my 4 series. Some useful videos on Youtube on what I needed to do to sort it. Mine was stuck on the passenger side. Took front nearside wheel and inner splash guard off, then reached my arm in to find the bonnet release cable. Grabbed it and a gave it a quick tug (biggrin) and it released the bonnet. Looked under the bonnet and the cable had come out of the release mechanism unit clip point. Pulling the bonnet release lever did not pull the cable enough to release the bonnet as it had become unclipped. Clipped it back in and put some strong metal tape over it to stop it coming out again.

That's how I sorted mine but yours might be different being a 6 series. Hopefully some help but try Youtube if not.

only the drivers side lifts up.

might try a knife under the tiny gap to try release the middle clip bit.

on my F10 M5, which i suspect has the same bonnet release catches (Please note these are the active pedestrian ones that "pop" the bonnet up) they seized up. A dosage of WD40 and then some grease resolved.

So they may just be stuck and need a sharp pull/ tap on the bonnet might free it.

I had this with both latches not releasing on the 2nd pull and the lever going as far you can pull it. A pretty miserable moment.

After the 'pop' on the 1st pull. I very gently pushed the bonnet down a few times after it 'bouncing back'. This allowed the catches to reseat ( I assume ). Repeated this process with pulling the lever and it released fully as normal. I cleaned out the catch area and the 'U-bolts' put some more grease in the catches and on the U-bolts. Tested the opening and closing a few times and it's been fine since.

No, I don't know either.

gave this all a good go today

i can with 2 people get the drivers side bonnet lifted up enough to find the middle swivel latch thing. but then it still doesnt open

the passenger side is stuck.

hopefully an easy fix. cant be asked for BMW to bill £400 for this
