My car is a 2015 F11 520d M-Sport Touring. As I’m reasonably handy with the spanners, and hate paying a garage to do a job I can do myself, I fitted new front pads, discs and sensor cable at the weekend. However I cannot now reset the service light. This is what’s happening…

1-Igniton on (engine off) and holding the trip reset button down on the instrument binnacle gives me this…

2-Hold the button down again and I get this…

3-Hold it down again to perform the reset, and the scroll bar goes from left to right, like this…

4-However, when the scroll bar gets to the end, I just get this error message. I’ve tried it on multiple occasions, no joy.

Can anyone shed any light on this? I’ve done about 60 miles in the car since fitting everything, and the brakes are working perfectly and bedding in nicely. The rears are fine and the fluid has just been changed (garage job as I was short of time) and the level is good.

Thanks in advance!

Something isn't right with the install of the sensor.

A few things can cause the "unsuccessful" result.

1) Make sure parking brake is off
2) It's possible that the value for CBS % remaining has hit an invalid (255%) value and needs a scan tool to reset the brake service rather than the in-built reset.
3) As said, it could be a duff sensor. If you can reset the brake service indicator with a paperclip or other wire shorting the two pins on the plug then it's the sensor.

OK thanks guys. I'll double check the sensor, it seems "idiot proof" at both ends and was a new Pagid part. As is happens, like an idiot I'd ordered two (assuming, like my Boxster it has one per side) so I do have a spare.

I have tried it with the parking brake off but will have another go just to make sure.

Paradigital, so you're basically saying pull the plug out of the box, and short the wire attached to the car, and attempt a reset, correct?

Correct, a new, untriggered sensor simply shorts the loom together, the act of wearing it down opens the circuit. If you short the car’s loom then you know that the “sensor” is fine (as it’s a solid paperclip). If the car can’t reset with a paperclip then you’ll likely need a scantool to sort it.

While you are there, check the wiring is still attached on the other side of the plug (car side) as they are pretty fragile & can be broken off.
