Was looking to get a 2020 Z4 20i, but am confused by the UK road tax .

Some places are say £168 year and some £520.

Which is it? £520 seems ridiculous for a smaller engine car.

Both are correct if the car over £40k when new.
Standard flat rate of £165 (or &168) and an extra £355 per year for the first 5 years if list price when new was over £40k.

Thank you.

I thought it was based on emissions.

Guess i'll have to take time to find one that cost under 40k.

That £40k is the official list price, including options, NOT the sale/sold price.

Thanks, so where would you find this info on a used car?

I think you might struggle - "Prices for the Z4 sDrive20i start at £38,165, though we reckon it’s worth spending that bit extra for an M Sport grade – these are available from £39,915. Given the standard equipment levels, we also reckon there’s no need to splash out on any optional extras as the Z4 comes with just about everything you’d need. "

Thats from July 2020

https://www.carkeys.co.uk/car-reviews/bmw-z4-sdriv...

So you'd be looking for a Sport model, not an M Sport, with close to no options on it. OR an M Sport in the base price colour and no options on it.

I personally wouldnt want to skimp on spec just to avoid the bit of extra tax.

I think you otherwise need the chassis number to check. I could be wrong. Maybe someone has a better way.

Ah, this is news to me! I've got a 2017 (67 plate) 540i x-Drive. So does that mean I should be paying the lower rate now? I'm paying my road tax by monthly DD and last time I checked it's definitely still at the higher rate. I'm confused (doesn't take much!). Thanks.

Thanks Nomad. I'll check that out. I see from the wonders of Google that the 67 plate ended in February 2018 so that means I must be switching to the lower rate by next month at the latest. This is rare good news on a cold January day! smile

Might be worth cancelling and restarting your tax monthly payment if it doesnt auto change.

You should be able to check when it was first registered online or from the V5C anyway.

Okay, so the higher rate applies for 5 years from the date the second year's road tax is paid. So it reverts to the lower rate on the 6-year anniversary of the car being registered. I've learnt something new today!

if you have the reg no. try using
https://www.checkcardetails.co.uk/cardetails/dm19h...
this gives ved costs and how long the extra payment lasts
