As per the title please, my friend has a Z4 (with the metal fold down roof), and stop / start battery which needs replacing.

Is this something that can be done DIY as in the olden days or does the battery need registering with the car?

Couple articles I've read so far suggest its not DIY but thought I'd ask the experts before giving him wrong advice.

Thanks in anticipation.

Which year?

They didn't all need battery registration IIRC

But the likes of the Creator C310/C410 via Amazon for £50 will code a battery to a BMW that requires it; also a very good code reader - plug n play

Worth having in your arsenal

It probably does need battery registration, every post 2004 BMW I've had has needed it, but it can be DIY'd with the right code reading device. If its the only thing you need the code reader for it might be worth seeing whether Halfords battery sale and fitting service includes coding.

Find a local indy battery supplier; they'll do it a lot cheaper!
