Evening all,

I've been researching a TVR 350i for a week or so and while looking at one in a dealership today I spotted the above chariot and decided that German is the way to go. I'm a newcomer to the marque so any hints and tips you guys have would be greatly appriciated. It's not my only car and will be a weekend and sunny day toy whilst not plugging up and down the motorway in my diesel workbarge.

The car I've seen has a full BMW history and from what I have read trawling the net this evening mileages above 100k aren't an issue. The one I have seen has 107k on the clock and as far as I can tell it is pretty sorted. A couple of little nicks here and there but nothing to worry about. Its an '87 D plate in metallic dark blue with beige leather. Not a highline model and has switchable auto transmission.

If there's anyone with experience of these, what would you consider to be a fair price? Any comments are greatly appricaited.

Cheers

One of the all time favourite BMW shapes!

It is a regular 635, not an M635 (I guess so, from the fact you mentioned the auto box).

Issues, as far as I have heard, are rust in the front wings and metric wheels, with tyres becoming increasingly difficult to find.

Sorry, my knowledge is a bit sketchy...

As an ex-M635 owner I'd say go for it. The things you really need to watch above checking the oliy bits are in good nick are rust (especially in the wings) and the electrics.

The rust in the wings affects most cars, but if the one you are looking at is 100k plus it might have already been looked at. You should also check the boot seal (rust lurking under there is another favourite - check the tool kit in the boot too as if this is rusty there's water getting into the boot from somewhere) and the sunroof as the drainage holes can block leading to problems.

As for the electircs, these were top of the range cars and most therefore had electric everything. Check everything works as although new motors are not too expensive they can be a b*gger to fit.

My advice would be to find one with the manual recaro seats (much less hassle) which has had the wings replaced. There are loads of 635's out there so hang on for a good one rather than go for the first you see.

As for price, between £5k and £7k should get you a good one. Above £7k and it will have to be mint and probably one of the last motorsport editions to justify the price. Also, if you pay above £7k you are very unlikely to find someone willing to pay that again on resale.

As I say, I'd go for it if I was you. My M635 was the best car I have owned and there isn't a day that goes by when I don't regret selling it.
