What part is this BMW X35i 2014 under engine

My brothers X3 has a leak and is smoking from this part. He lives in the US, so I can't just pop around to look at it. Any ideas,

Looks like the catalytic converter to me.

It may be that oil from above that point is dripping causing the smoke, rather than the cat leaking.

Thanks, the picture is actually a screen grab from a video, in which you can see smoke coming out of the pipe connected to the elbow. Is this the lambda sensor?

No need to reply, i found a video. It is oxygen sensor bank 1, sensor 2.
