I've just bought a 2002 530i A Sport without Sat Nav and am considering a retro fit. Where do I start? What should I buy and at what price? As a technophobe I'd need to pay to have it installed. Who's recommended and how much should I budget? Anyone in Kent or close? Advice welcome

I'd price up Tom Tom as a comparison if I were you, so you know what you can get for your money first.

I've only heard of Bexley Motor Works down south. You could start there.

I looked into this when I first got the B3. I came to the conclusion that it would be expensive (~£1K) and people weren't that complimentary about the system anyway.

I opted for TomTom on my phone which whilst isn't as tidy as an integrated solution cost a lot less (£200) and I can move it from car to car.

I went the iPaq route with TomTom software. Get a bluetooth sat nav system and an iPaq for £500 !

I also went pda tomtom, also get speedcamera db, traffic etc etc.

The cradle is hardwired and so is reasonably neat

get a tom tom or similar - the standard BMW satnav is pants. It loves taking you down dead ends and no-through roads and you cant plot a route and I'm not speccing one for a car again.

Thanks for your views guys. Tom Tom seems to be a real candidate and I'll take a closer look. I am surprised, though, that the factory fitted system has so few supporters.

Never had any issues with it taking me down dead ends etc - but that's not a fault of the system, only of incorrect map data

That said, I wouldn't bother retrofitting it - it's a time consuming job and too expensive to do so compared to external solutions now (eg. TomTom - which can be taken to your next vehicle etc)
