So I bought my 2009 E70 xdrive 4.8i a few days ago. It's got 128K miles on it and is in a good condition. Supposedly the original long term owner was "BMW enthusiast" and did all the servicing at BMW officially up to 2021 (there's confirmation email from BMW). Then there's almost 2 year gap in history. The dealer who sold it recommended changing engine and gearbox oil for peace of mind. I called up an independent BMW specialist and they booked me for full service + gearbox oil change. So in addition to what I was initially thinking, full service I think includes stuff like spark plugs, brake fluid, all kinds of filters and thorough inspection among other things. That's gonna set me back around £1100 and they said that after doing the inspection they may discover some other stuff. Is all that worth it or should I forgo some otherwise long lasting parts like spark plugs? I should note that next month I'm planning a long trip across continental Europe, so I need the car to be in a good shape.

Well with two years the last service, you certainly should have the brake fluid changed. By filters, I suppose you mean air and cabin filters. I guess you could leave those and the spark plugs. Frankly I would service the lot, you know where you stand then. Always factor in a full service in the price, unless you know for sure it has been recently done.

What I meant is that it's unclear what was done in the last couple of years. The car is in good condition, so I assume it was maintained during that time. Basically what is mentioned on the quote is: aur filters, microfilter, spark plugs, oil sump pan, oil filer, brake fluid, air filter left and right, plus obviously oil for engine and gear box. All comes out to £1300 actually and they said they will let me know what else needs replacing after doing the full inspection, so I fully expect these guys to try to rip me off.
I guess I could leave out spark plugs and cabin air filters.

Without any documentary evidence to the contrary i would assume it has not been serviced !

Gearbox oil /service alone is several hundred £ if done properly
