I currently have a very nice SLK55 AMG which I’ve had for nearly 4 years, it’s a second car and a bit of a weekend toy. I’m getting itchy feet and fancy a change as I normally only keep a car for 2 years or so. I do like the look of the 6 series 2 door 3.0 diesel and I can get a 30,000 mile 16/17 plate for around the same as the SLK is worth.
Question is has anybody done a similar swap and if so what do you think / how do they compare or does anyone have the 640 and if so what’s your thoughts please ? Also in the frame is a similar age Audi TTs.

I guess the first thing is that it’s a 3.0 litre not a 4.0 litre.

Yes of course you are right. I can’t get out of my mind that BMW have changed the number designations. Same car though and yes it’s a 3.0 I meant.

I think that you'd find the 640d really boring to drive after the SLK55 to be honest. They are lovely cars(I did 70k miles in a 2012 model), but they feel big and heavy, plus they aren't exactly engaging to drive either. They are good at the GT/long distance cruising thing though.

I've also had a 2012 Audi TTS quattro(did 68k miles in one) and they are better from a light and nimble perspective, but they still aren't the last word in dynamic driving for me though. The steering is very light and lifeless, plus they do the predictable Audi understeer thing as well sadly.

Ok thanks. I had a Mk1 TT 225 Quattro remapped to 275 and enjoyed that at the time. The Slk is fantastic but I just fancy a change. BMW 235i ?

I've driven a couple of Mk1 TT's as well and I really liked them. thumbup I didn't think the Mk2 was as good though, but I do really like the Mk3 TT but I don't have any experience with them.

I'd definitely be very tempted with the M235i over the 640d/TT for sure. I've always fancied the M235i myself. smile

Yes they seem to have decent power output and reasonable reviews. I’ve had a couple of BMW before. A Z3 2.8 and a Z4 coupe 3.0 and quite fancy another.

Yes I had a Z4 coupe 3.0si. Lovely car but I’ve had a Z4 so that’s that box ticked.

Yes I hear you, but most reviews say the Z4 coupe is 8/10 against the Z4M. That was close enough for the 3 years I had it and it was a great car as well. Traded it for SLK55 which has scratched the V8 itch again as I used to have a TVR Chimaera.

Agree, i had a 640d, was great well made car, quick too but was a boring drive. Doesn't make a nice sound, great on fuel and interior was lovely.

If you've got an slk55, I'd be looking at mk2 ttrs, mk3 tts bmw 240i. The reason for the 240 over the 235 is down to the b58 engine which is just a peach.
As others have said the z4m, you can pick up a roadster for low teens and if you've never had the s54 before it cant be compared to anything else. The noise on its own is just so unique and with it being a proper M car it does make all the difference you 3.0 Z4 I'd honestly say would be more like 6/10 of a Z4M
