Could do with some PistonHeads advise.
My 520d (2010 F11) is perfect at changing gear in day to day life, however when queuing in slow moving heavy traffic it becomes a PITA.
Crawling to a stop , then to Park then back to crawling, it really thumps into drive, sometimes after a rather worrying delay.

As soon as the traffic clears normal changes resume.

It has only done it a couple of times now, but it's done it on me and Mrs BS.

Car has done ~80k and it changes perfectly at all other times.

Thanks
BS

How's the cooling system and level? does the A/c / pusher electric fan come on properly when needed?

I had a similar, rarely-occuring issue with the 5hp24 in my older 535 (petrol); only happened, now and then, when very hot - like crawling in traffic. alternate version - the last change down would sometimes be a bit hard, before stopping. It all went away /completely/ once I did the rad change (end-tank weep fix - typ e39; and easy diy) during which time I left the engine block coolant drain out through the trans cooler as its the lowest rad hose to drain, on mine. That was 2yrs ago - not had a single instance since (and still mean to change the gearbox fluid...) Easy to check anyway

After which -yes, gearbox fluid service, as already recommended above. As I must do...

Thanks for the info - this morning I had to take Mrs BS 1 series to our local indy as the rear window regulator failed.
Anyway discussing the issue with him and he is of the same conclusion in that is the rad fan running ?
The engine runs that cold that it wouldn't call for the fan to run even in traffic, but the gearbox might.

Can't say I've ever heard the fan run, but then I've often got a nattering little one in the back, and if he's not nattering he's watching some bks on a device !
