Afternoon all,

My BMW manufacturers warranty ends next month and Im keen to have something in place as such can I get your views on whether you would renew direct with BMW or seek to do it via a 3rd party which appears to be somewhat cheaper - going by warranty wise as an example or would you pay the premium to stay with the manuifacturer

Thabks in advance

Ive had no problem with warranty claims, you can reduce premium by paying an excess on claims.

When I had my BMW I used the BMW extended warranty and had 2 big repairs in 2 years (one replacement of the iDrive system was £2.5k alone) - no problems all sorted hassle free. If I had my BMW I would still pay for it, think it was £75 a month on a M235i convertible

Check the small print on the third-party warranty, especially exclusions on the policy. Although BMW warranty is more expensive you will probably find that it is much more comprehensive in terms of coverage.
It's also possible to pay monthly with the BMW policy, so you can cancel at any time (assuming no claims have been made).

I would hazard a guess that the factory BMW warranty will be far, far better 'VFM' even if its more expensive.

If I were you - I'd look at the options as:

- Keep BMW Warranty
or
- Put some money away each month and gamble.

Wouldnt touch 3rd party warranties at all these days.

Agree with the above.

BMW warranty only or put cash to one side each month.

There is the infamous case of a PH'er with his BMW M5 and a third party warranty company. That thread must have cost all these warranty companies hundreds of thousands in lost revenue over the years after one company showed its true colours.

The BMW one isn't actually an extension of the manufacturer's warranty, but an insurance policy that covers quite a comprehensive list of stuff and all claims are handled directly via the main dealer. I suspect it's more expensive than a generic 3rd party warranty but I believe also covers more and is less hassle because of the tie in with the dealer network.

I've had it on mine for the last 2.5 years, but so far (typically!) haven't had cause to claim on it.

I’d go BMW or stick the cash to one side.

My experience of third party warranties isn’t that great.

As others have said, BMW warranty or stick some cash under the mattress.

The BMW insured warranty covers wear and tear up to 60k miles which is a crucial plus compared to the 3rd parties as it is their favourite way of rejecting a claim.

BMW Warranty all the way…

I had one for almost 10 years on my 330D. Over that period I had three new 313 Alloys (corrosion) a handful of EGR valves and coolant systems, as well as an almighty 2.5k strip down and de-coke when my idling and throttle response went iffy. Absolutely no issue with any of it from BMW, maybe 4-5k with of stuff done over the period.

Just about to add one for my F82 M4, which will come to the end of it’s warranty period next week. Seems ludicrous not to with any modern car IMHO smile

There's a pretty material change in annual price when you go over the 60K limit though.

Is possible to somewhat avoid that by switching to monthly, but in my case I got a letter a year or so after going over 60K, advising me that due to the age and mileage of my car, my premium would increase. A few years back, so can't remember how much it went up by.
