M240i vs 440i vs m235i
Discussion
Hi,
So I currently own a 430d x drive and really enjoy the car in terms of the performance, fuel economy and looks however i feel i am missing out on the sound of a nice petrol.
I have been looking at M240i, M235i and also 440i's. I test drove a 440i GC today and was quite underwhelmed at the sound..It sounded great on a cold start but when driving the car i could virtually barely hear it even with the windows down and sunroof open?? I was just wondering will this be the same on the other cars, m240i and m235i? I have noticed lots of people saying the m235i sounds better than the B58 in the 440i/m240i but didn't realise how poor the sound was on the b58's. I enquired about the MPPSK kit and the salesperson didn't seem to know much about them... he said that it was only an option on the 340i and 440i and it isn't available for the m240i/m235i's - is this true..he didn't seem too confident?
Also in terms of the MPPSK kit if they are only available on the 440i would it bring the performance up to the performance of the m240i (0-60 in 5.1 in the 440i vs 4.6 in m240i 0-60) and would it make a noticeable difference to the sound too?
I am curious to see if anyone has made a similar jump too as to be completely honest when i got back in my 430d i actually weirdly preferred the noise of my diesel....thats how underwhelming the b58 was for me..
The petrol felt slightly smoother but there was absolutely no difference in terms of speed/power from what i could feel on that short test drive.
All in all, should i be avoiding the cars stated or will the MPPSK kit make a big difference? or is it something else i should be focusing on e.g. an aftermarket exhaust etc?

A couple of mates of mine have an M140 and an m240, no argument that performance is out of this world, but noise wise, in my eyes they just dont produce the straight six sound like the NA cars. My n53 630i sounds far better in standard form than thiers. It also gets left behind at the lights, but it's got that sound that keeps me happy.
What age were the cars?
The OPF what was introduced for 68 plate cars on really robs the noise. A 240i without an OPF should sound half decent. Also on none OPF 240i’s can have the Performance backbox which makes them sound much better.
However, I still think the N55 is the 35i cars sounds a bit sweeter.

Yep, throttle response on the n53 is lovely too. Just about to part ways with mine after a looong time, and I'll miss it tbh. Very good motors overall IMO, just need a bit of know how to keep them running right.N55 I found dull by comparison to n53 in the way it winds up but does sound pretty decent.

What car was your n53 in? What are you changing to?
I had an m140, owned it for about a year and then changed to 440 GC.
I had the Mppsk fitted a few months into ownership of the 440 and still own it now, over 3 years later.
Performance wise it feels quicker than my recollection of the 140 and is more sure footed on the road. The sound makes a significant difference to the overall driving experience so in reality the performance is likely similar. The exhaust is switchable, in comfort it's slightly louder than sport on the standard car but with a much nicer tone and in sport and sport + it is quite loud but a nice tone.
Appearance wise I prefer the 440 and it's more practical, 140 is pretty pokey inside if practically is a concern, i have two young daughters so we don't often travel light! Interior feel is noticeably nicer in the 440, spec dependent, but better in my opinion. I have the digital dash and optional leather trim which lifts the interior over some more basic spec cars I've seen. Must haves are the reverse cam too and Harmon kardon.
I have not compared values but assume the 440 may still be a slight premium over an equivalent aged/condition 140 but with the mppsk (circa £1600) it transforms the 440 and I'm still not bored of it whereas the 140 i moved on from after a year. A 440 without mppsk probably wouldn't have lasted as long.
Having owned both I'd pick the 440 with mppsk. Cotswold Bmw in Cheltenham were selling it which is where I got mine, albeit in 2019.
