Evening all. I've just bought an 08 330d convertible and it's throwing an orange battery light at me. I've charged the current battery and it was find for a bit but then didn't hold charge so looks like it's time for a new one.

I don't mind doing it myself although there's about 8 trim pieces to move to get to it but I have no way of coding it. Is that really necessary? I could also get Halfords to fit it for £18 and save myself the trouble but I'm presuming they won't code it either...

Appreciate any advice

Cheers
Dan

You want something like the Creator C310 in handy

c£50 on Amazon, but a great code reader and shows live data; but will also register the battery for you. Really hand to have in just for these reasons!

If you've replaced the battery like for like; then it just needs registering.

If you've replaced the battery with a different spec'd one, then it needs to be coded to the car

Thanks, will the Creator C310 code a different battery as well as register or just register one that's the same? I figure if I'm going to replace it I might as well but the biggest one in that'll fit.

Thanks,

IIRC it just registers the battery; but if you Google it, it'll explain more

As long as the cranking amps are the same, you should be fine

Bimmertool does this as well; c£20 app and you need a Bluetooth dongle (c£25 off Amazon); but that's a coding app, doesn't do code reading/diagnostics etc

I use bimmercode and bimmerlink for this.

Bimmercode allows you to code the battery type (agm, normal, 80/90/100/110ah etc.

Bimmerlink then allows you to register the battery.

If you code the correct type of battery you will find that your orange battery light goes away as mine did and that the battery life % increases significantly.

I use iPhone so have spent £60 on the two apps @ £30 each and I use vgate Bluetooth adapter £30.

Bimmercode allows you to code some cool features in to an unlimited amount of cars, I’ve done loads and it’s always been perfect.

Thanks, that sounds easier than a virtual machine with this INPA software. I don't suppose you know if you can code the car to open/close the roof from the key using bimmercode do you?

Cheers!

If you haven’t got comfort access, you’ll need a module that sits between the stock loom and the roof actuator.

C310 won’t do battery coding or registration. 2008 is around the changeover from normal to agm battery so may not need registration if it’s pre IBS. Ibs can be identified by extra wiring on negative terminal.

Registered the battery to my 2011 F01 with no issues (new AGM battery, like for like specs)

It can't code a different spec battery though; doesn't give that option

I guess you have a newer C310 than mine. Mine can’t do registration.

Had the same issue, just replaced the battery with the same spec as the old one. I didn't do any registering or coding as I was told the car will "learn", that was 4 years ago and I've had no issues.

No it won't you've just been lucky

The way that the system works; the battery does need to be registered even if like for like

Cheers for the replies. I have a Yuasa YBX3019 12V 95Ah 850A SMF Battery on the way and then I'm going to order a DCAN cable and attempt to follow this guide - https://ohptools.com/blogs/news/how-to-register-an... to code it.

Looks fairly straight forward so fingers crossed 🤞🏻

Well, took the old battery out and it was a 90aH and the replacement is 95 so it's close enough it won't need coding. I bought a K+DCAN cable off amazon for 28quid and registered it though using INPA so a good saving made on garage prices. I can also start fiddling about with coding some features as well cool
