I've been looking for a 330ci coupe, and I have seen a 2001 1, 83,XXX miler, last serviced at 73,XXX and showing -2500miles on the display.

Possibly buying through a big dealer that has performed a 110 point(etc) check. The car has been serviced 5 times to date. Others i've looked at with similar miles have been serviced 7 times...

The car is cheap - my question is what is the likely cost due to a shaky service schedule?

Is it one to avoid?

Check the service book -- there should be a logical sequence of services. Probably oil service, inspection 1, oil service, inspection 2 etc
If they are at 15000 mile intervals ie 15000, 30000, 45000, 60000, 75000 that would be your 5 services and that would be OK.
The service intervals vary depending on how the cars driven and is calculated by the on board diagnostics.
My M Roadster seems to be serviced at about 12000 mile intervals but the 3 series 16000.
