I've had this car for a year now and absolutely love it. The exhaust is spectacular when it comes to sound, snaps and burbles but when driven in sport or spot+ it drones like crazy around 2k rpm. so much so that the whole cabin vibrates and it's utterly infuriating to keep the valves open when cruising.

I wonder, have any of you experienced this and found a fix for the drone? I don't really want to change the exhaust as frankly it is one of the, if not the best sounding exhaust on a 40i i have heard.

Cheers!

On a 4GC with the same MPPSK, tbh I drive in Comfort if I’m with kids / wife or generally on a long motorway run where (1) I don’t care for noise or performance and (2) I need decent economy. On a run the other day up and down the m3, I used just under a quarter of a tank which was marvellous but it means sitting at 70mph in Comfort.

However on windy B roads, spirited drives in the forest etc then of course I put in Sport (passengers or not) as it’s a different experience in after. I’m never cruising at a particular speed (and maintaining same RPM) for very long and so the drone never really becomes a thing.

I guess I didn’t do anything to prevent the drone, but that drone only really exists (and gets irritating) if you’re sitting at same RPM over a long time period (when it becomes noticeable) in which case the solution for me is to put in Comfort as I’m not in the right mode for the type of driving I’m doing.

Hope this makes sense!

Ps given I alternate between Comfort and Sport and regularly with wife / kids in the car, I disabled the animation on the central idrive display that shows when you change driving mode.

My wife would regularly comment when I was moving in to Sport what the rationale was (racing at lights, country drive, wanting the burbles) so now if I press the Sport button only I get to see the mode change on the driver main dash display.

I did read somewhere not to start and hoon it in Sport on a cold morning with a cold engine too - ie I always tend to start in Comfort and then move to Sport when I want the noise / have reached good driving roads etc. When I get back to my road after said drive, I revert back to Comfort so no one hears the burbles :-)

How do you do this? I have the exact same issue with the wife & kids!

I will try to locate the menu but it’s something like “sport display on/off” from the idrive menu under car personalisation for the different driving modes. It didn’t take much finding and now my o/h has no idea what mode I’m in which is great.

Will take a look and report back

I found mine droned too much when I had it in comfort. I can't imagine cruising in sport or sport+. I would only shift into either of the sport modes if I was unlikely to be maintaining constant engine speed, for example on the mountain roads around where I live.

The most annoying thing about the exhaust was that if you knocked the traction off, which I found was by far the best way of reducing understeer in snow, it would open up the valves. So I would end up being really loud driving slowly around town, which was a bit embarrassing.

The new car has an 'adaptive' setting which is a much better compromise.
