I have seen a rather nice one of these in a dealership not too far away and am thinking of a test drive.
Model: 330d Sport Saloon
Price: £19,250
Mileage: 32,839
Transmission: Automatic
Fuel: Diesel
Exterior colour: Topaz Blue
Interior: Black Leather
Date of registration: November 2001

What are they like to own? Anything I should be looking out for?
I have heard the turbos can be a problem later in life, but this example has done only 32k.

What are the auto/steptronic boxes like? Sturdy?

Does this seem pricey even for a main dealer?

Many thanks in advance.

Hi,

My views on 330D Sport.

I have a 2000 model (I think 184BHP as standard) with 110000 miles on it.

As standard the car was OK, although not as quick as I would have liked. So after 2 days of ownership I got it chipped by DMS and now I love it. This made a MASSIVE difference

I timed it on an uphill run before and after from 30 mph to a set point.

Before: Terminal speed 85
After: Terminal speed 95

Of course I did this on a private race track..
The car was 2 seconds quicker over the same distance. It also really kicks now when accelarating from low speed.

I have not had the car for long so cannot really comment on reliability (except for the common aircon that I knew about when I bought the car. Pretty cheap to fix).

MPG I get about 40 ish cruising at a constant 90 ish

Around the lanes where I live (lots of go stop) I get around 25. Seems to average around 33 with a bit of town driving and motorway work. Have to say I do have a heavy right foot though which does nothing for fuel consumption. I found since the car was chipped I am less inclined to kick it down (its an auto). Before it was fettled I was constantly flooring it to get the car to go.

Cost wise I paid £12,500 for mine, but it has done a few miles! However, car is in great condition and hides the mileage well.

Have not driven many autos but the auto box works well with the diesel and the chipping improves the whole package enormously.

I guess you will be getting a facelift car which I think has more power as standard, worth checking though. I am told my car now makes 226BHP and another 70 lb/ft torque (if I remember correctly)

Caduceus,

That particular one does seem a bit dear. I'm on my 3rd 330d sport now and mine have all been manuals. The auto is very good and is found on 85% of 330d's.

Turbos can be fragile, but if you warm up and warm down accordingly they should give you no probs.

My latest one is the 204bhp model and is averaging 41.7mpg in mixed driving.

They're a cracking car, but try and get a facelifted 2002 or later car. These had a different bonnet profile, rear bumper valance and quicker steering rack (M3 chunky wheel. For your £20k you should easily be able to get a suitable vehicle.

Cheers
Matt
