My father has just put down a deposit for a 2nd hand (10 months old), new style 5 series - 530i.

It's full spec'd up, with sat nav, seats that hold on to you (very strange), and many other gadgets that it'll take years to find them all.

Anyhow...the price he's paying is 23,000 of his English pounds and I'd like to know if that's a good price (seems to be according to Parkers but they weren't exactly accurate with the value of my car), and what people think of the car.

Opinions are mixed at the moment from those i've spoken to. Some love it, some hate it.....

Ta all!

Can't comment on the price with any authority but it seems like a fair one to me. Usual BM caveats apply though, auto/leather/good colour.
As to liking the car, not sure about the shape myself, I think it works better as a touring, also the interior to me is a step backwards.
I really think the new shape will hit the residuals more than previous shapes, as you either love it or hate it, most I know fall into the latter camp.

i am biased as i'm on my 2nd new shape (E60) 5-series. like most new bmw's the new 5-series was always designed to look better on the larger alloy wheels, sadly they are extra ££££ on most models.

the rest of the exterior styling i think is great, more and more of the initial "haters" i know now seem to be warming to the shape, in the sport form it looks even better, current car is the sport type and i do prefer the meaner looks.

both my 5's have had 18" wheels. personally i love the shape, the xenons look and the interior IMHO only "appears" to be a step backwards as BMW have reduced the amount of buttons required by fitting i-drive.

oh and don't believe the press and people like JClarkson, i-dirve is a piece of brilliant design and is actually VERY easy to use and just as safe as it there were buttons to press instead.

your father will enjoy his new car, a lot!!!

Thats gotta be, wot, a £10k loss of someones hard-earned in 10 months to be only £23k for a 530i, now thats a shed-load of depreciation!

I think they look quite superb from the back and for some reason, prefer the discreet but still menacing protrusion of two rather than the M5's 4 firing pipes...

Beginning to warm to the E60 from all angles and having finally sat in one recently (Adam T's M5, no less) am pleasantly reassured about the solidity of the interior.

Would agree the touring versions appear super svelte.

That price seems awesome - especially with (presumeably) auto/leather plus the things you mentioned. I looked a few mths ago at 1 yr old models and they were in the £30K area. Is it from a BMW dealer?

What were they thinking???
Personally I think they look a disaster but the E39 was a hard act to follow. I had one as a coutesy car for a week. I hated it. That I-drive thing for a start. Anybody who see`s one wrapped around a tree , its probably because the driver was trying to tune the radio.........
And the engine - you can`t hear it!! Fine for some but I want to feel like there is a hint of menace under the bonnet. No doubt it is great engineering but its got zero character. I couldn`t wait to give it back.
To sum it up the first thing my kids said when I arrived home was -
"Dad we`re not getting in that Grandad car" ....nuff said

Now if they lend me an M5 next time I may have a different opinion, or even better a B5.

Gotta say my emotions are mixed (nothing new there!)

Had a drive in a 645 and a 535d Touring on Sunday morning and in both the i-drive is a complete pain - I didn't find it intuitive or easy to use at all (and that was after 30 mins+ in each car). The screen is well positioned though, much better than looking down into the car.

The 645 was a complete blast, rapid and sure footed with great brakes, but the 535d was a disappointment. It was reasonably quick, but the ride was too soft and wooly and the brakes were reluctant to do the work required to stop the car, oh and I felt that the rear-view and wing mirrors were undersized. The half electric drivers seat couldn't be adjusted into a fully comfortable position and the steering wheel (again) doesn't extend out far enough. So all in all I doubt that I'll ever have one.

The 645 on the other hand, very comfortable and that makes the M6 a distinct possibility.!
