I’m thinking about buying a e39 523, the car is an R-reg with full service history and 140k miles.

What are the general problems these cars tend to have and what other problems are likely with the high mileage?

You should swing for the 528i if at all possible as its notably faster, surprisingly. I think there were nicasil [sp?] issues with cylinder bore wear on earlier ['97ish]cars, but you could try www.bmwcarclubgb.co.uk for more comprehensive info.
