Hi can anyone tell me how to get to my air con hedgehog resistor thing. 2000 model 330D Sport

I have bought one and understand that it is located in the to the left of the drivers footwell next to the the clutch pedal.

however, I have an auto and there is a footrest there. I have taken off the cover located beneath the steering wheel and mates with the carpet in the footwell and cannot see it.

Can anyone give me a guide as to how to get at the resistor so I don't have to go the brute force method.

Thanks,

Matt

Well still not found it yet. I removed the panel under the steering wheel (this included disconnecting an internal light, and the integrated phone speaker) .

Now the speedo does not work and the traction and abs lights have come on (traction now does not work as I found out in the rain yesterday).

Now, I am assuming that disconnecting an internal light would not cause this problem so what else could I have done? So far I have only looked around a bit and have not disconnected any major wiring.

Also, do I need to go to BMW to get the service lights turned off or do they automatically reset when the speedo issue is sorted (assuming I can sort it).

Oh yeah and any clue as to the resistor location. Is it behind the panel under the steering wheel, or do I have to remove the carpet lower down to the left bottom of the drivers footwell?

Cheers,

Matt

First off, I don't have any answers to your current niggles. Sorry.

I'm actually posting to ask you how you are finding the 330d, as I am interested in getting one myself.

How is it? Power, ride, comfort, mpg, etc??

Hope you get it sorted out soon mate.

Cad

Simple things first, have you blown a fuse?

I wonder if you've unplugged the DSC unit somehow whilst removing that panel, or perhaps one of the buses.

When I get home later I'll look in the TIS for you.

Thanks for the response.

Update from today the problem seems to be intermittant. Yesterday the speedo was working and all the lights went out. They came on again after 50miles when the speedo stopped working again. It is now twitching now and again.

When it stopped working all I had done was disconnect the speakers (park warning) and interior light. I did put a little force on the interior light wires accidently but this is the only thing I think I could have caused as I had not touched anything else. The interior light works fine by the way.

I spoke to the local independant who said it was probably unrelated to what I have done and is more likely to be the speed sensor. They are going to try and sort it out on Wed. Will update when I have more info.

I did find the hedgehog resistor but I cannot get it out. It is located behind another electrical item that I just cannot work out how to remove. Again I'll get the indy to sort it.

Matt (very disapointed could not fix myself - TVR is much easier to work on!)

Matt,

If you like to tinker with cars then I really recommend you get a copy of the BMW TIS cd .. it has detailed plans of the cars and steps to do most stuff you could ever wish to do!

Copies are all around the Internet - ebay etc. Or maybe someone at your local dealer will make you a copy, if you know them well enough

When you removed the panel, did you knock or disturb the brake light switch ? That's about all I can think of .. the DSC/ASC unit under the bonnet has connections between the dash, the pedal, fusebox etc. Or perhaps the speaker .. this acts as the PDC/warning gong and is connected to the dashboard .. just thinking aloud really ..

All sorted now thanks to great service from BMW indi in Crowthorne.

They sorted the Hedgehog.

The traction/abs lights etc where caused by a faulty speed sensor in near side wheel. It was just coincidence that this happened the key turn after I had taken the panel off to try and replace the Hedgehog hence me thinking I had broken something.

All in all £139 to change the Hedgehog and to supply and fit the speed sensor (This was completely rusted in place and had to be drilled out in the end). It took about an hour and 20 mins in total.

Well impressed, problems diagnosed over the phone (no BMW computer) and excellant service. Car will definately be going back come service time.
