Hi all

Recently bought a 540i Auto which has 153k miles on the clock.

had a few BM's in the past and am familiar with the basics of servicing cars.

Car is in exeptional condition with a full BMW history and drives like a dream.

It's due an oil service soon which will be done to keep the history going but wanted to give it a once over and a basic service and wanted to know any particular points which may require attention on this particular model due to the milage.

I have heard that the front wheel bearings can need replacing on these? can hear a very mild whirring sound from the passenger front sometimes.

Would the timing chain or other parts attatched (tensioner etc) require any attention? no noise's as such coming from this area at the moment.

please feel free to add to my list of things to do:

Oil/filter change
Coolant change
spark plugs
air filter
pollen filters

Thanks in advance.

Jay.

Water pump impellor. They're plastic and can break.

Seconded. I owned an e39 540 with that problem.
Other than that, they are virtually unburstable, and pretty easy to service.

Check your brake discs as well. For some reason mine used to eat them.
