Is it really worth £1500 & associated insurance premium hikes?

I'm 3 weeks into ownership of a 340i and whilst absolutely loving it (mpg aside) & aware that it's a super quick car, I just feel as if it's a little quiet and tends to eat up the speedometer without much fuss/awareness of getting to such speeds.

I did look at a 340i, have had many 335i, 435i and wanted one but only with the MPPSK because the engine always felt a bit muted all be it pretty quick .

But when i went to get one fitted it was near on £2k if you get the engine flashed and exhaust, you then had the increased insurance... you can just get the exhaust for under £1k and you can finance these over a year for 0% with most dealerships.

In the end i got an M4, the insurance was the same as a MPPSK 340 and looked, went and handled better LOL

What plate is your car OP? If it's 68 plate or later then you can't have the MPPSK anyway as it's got petrol particulate filters.

Mine has PPF and was quiet. I took it to PCW Exhausts who took the exhaust off and rebuilt the inside of the resonator and back box to make it louder, cost £300 from memory. I then disconnected the exhaust valve so it's open all the time. It's now reasonably loud, not MPPSK level but pretty good.

I declared exhaust mods and it didn't affect insurance premium so felt it was a win.

So, I've had the following cars:

  • 340i + MPE (sold)
  • M4CP (F82) (sold)
  • 340i + MPPSK (current car)
The 340i + MPPSK sounds the absolute best. It's louder than the M4CP when the MPPSK has the valves open - it's honestly embarrassing around town if you push, very loud and ridiculous. One of the reason I sold the M4CP after just 6 months was the terrible noise - honestly, couldn't stand it, real let down of the car. If it sounded as good as the MPPSK, I would have kept the M4 but it just didn't.

The difference between the MPE and MPPSK is very significant - the MPE is just a back box while MPPSK is a catback system. Probably one of the best sounding BMWs (straight-6 at least).

440i GC and I had a MPPSK fitted about a year after ownership from Cooper reading for £1700 in 2018.

Of the MP aero kit, bigger wheels etc, the MPPSK is by far the best mod.

In comfort it is nice and muted but in sport or heaven forbid sport+ it can be really loud with pops and bangs. I used to commute and leave the house early (6am) and was worried about the 30sec start up routine which is rather loud, but if you depress the gas for the time then it isn’t that loud and then I just drive off.

PS the dealer took the old exhaust off and I put on eBay.. within a few hours it had sold for £200 or so and the buyer collected from the dealership directly. So it made it more affordable. I wouldn’t have been able to transport it back anyway in one piece. Lots of other 3 and 4 series cars with twin rather than dual (I always get confused) and people prefer the look of the native 440i exhaust. Made the swap more palatable.

I had my MPPSK fitted to my 340 Touring at Marshall BMW for approx £1300 fitted inc map almost 3 years ago.... Best £1300 Ive ever spent.. I usually

change my cars every 18 months and could prob stretch to an M2/3/4.... But just love this car too much to consider letting it go MPPSK is epic.

Yes, 100%. It's hilariously antisocial with the valves open.

Notable increase in torque as well, my current m340i doesn't feel any faster at all, but it's way more muted frown

One thing which is niggling away in my head every time I drive my MPPSK 340 is that since its last service back in May the car has lost around 80

per cent of the pops and bangs which were very easily provoked in sport or sport +... My gut feeling was that a software update had been done and

probably due to Euro regs the pops have been reduced massively.. After scanning the B58 forums it appears that I'm not the only one who has

experienced this... I then decided to visit a local indy BMW specialist and spoke with the main man (20 years BMW main dealer experience master

technician) who assured me that BMW cannot legally do a software update due to lawsuits regarding engine maps being overwritten etc) He even

checked my reg / VIN to see exactly what was done to my car and NO software update was on the list of things done at the service. I only ever use 97

RON / Super Unleaded.. Would be interested to hear anyone's experience on this, PS its still the best mod ever and some may even not want the pops

and bangs but it was only ever there if you provoked it and was easily preventable ( by lifting off the gas quickly or slowly in manual mode) Its my only

negative as I loved the noise on tap when in the mood as it made the car very Jekyl and Hyde between Comfort and Sport +.......

No discernible difference since I had it fitted a few years ago and after a couple of main dealer services. I only really put in Sport / + and let it burble on overruns - I.e put gas down hard-ish, then take off and let car cruise whilst listening to the gargle type noise.

I have tried for bigger pops in manual etc and achieved a couple of times. I saw instructions somewhere (put in manual, up to third, rev significantly etc) and it worked just to demo. Tbh I’m glad it doesn’t have backfire type bangs without some provocation else I wouldn’t be popular around here LOL.

Oh well, a week's delay before I can get it. Tested positive for covid yesterday - 1st day of annual leave as well.

Oh that's a pain but it will be worth the wait.... I was behind a 440i earlier with MPPSK in my works van and it sounded epic... Not used to hearing one from

outside... Tempted to go for a blast in mine now biggrin

A neighbour of mine has it, and it is a touch anti-social. I live 3 houses away and hear it start up every morning. It makes me smile as I quite like it, with some jealousy that my m340i doesn't sound as good, but I know his direct neighbours are not too impressed.

I liked the performance improvement on mine but in the end I found the noise a bit too much, and on the motorway there was an unpleasant droning noise. As noted, start-up is probably too loud, especially as I often had to leave for the airport at 4am. I could hear my wife starting it in our underground parking from 3 floors up so I don't know how many folks I woke in the lower apartments.

The worst part of it for me was in the winter. I tend to drive on snow (which we can have for 6 months) with traction off to let some wheel slip. This seemed to open the valves meaning I had to drive around town at 20kmh like one of the local spotty youths in their A45s whilst the Bentleys, Ferraris and Porsches were burbling quietly.

My current B5 is quieter in sport+ than the 340 was in comfort.

I suspect the underground parking will only exacerbate the noise what with low ceilings and other cars/walls for it to bounce off. I have a driveway and normally park at the side between our house and the neighbours house which is wide enough for 3 cars and is open at the rear except for a fence - I do think it's a little loud but not to a nuisance level. Our neighbour across the road has an S5 which has a similar noise level when cold starting.

The drone is certainly there when sitting between 1500 + 2k revs, but if you're only plodding along do you need it to be in Sport/Sport+? I just flip it back to comfort in that instance.

It's louder than a standard 340 even in comfort, though obviously not like in Sport.

Your point about the underground car park is probably true, though a neighbour has a 911 Turbo and a Panamera Turbo Hybrid and it was louder than those.

I'm glad to have tried the lound-exhaust thing and of course it's personal taste about the noise. As said, the performance improvement was significant, not just in output but also the way it delivers it and I quite possibly might have bought something else if I hadn't tried one with MPPSK. It was an option on new 340s here in Switzerland and my registration documents stated the improved PS. I had it on the car from new.

Sigh.... Another thread about the lauded MPPSK that I cannot fit to my 440i as it's a 2019 model. I wish I'd looked this up before buying it cry.

Don't suppose BMW have bothered providing anything for the PPF model cars?

I think the only BMW option you have is the MPE exhaust but it's nowhere near as nice as the MPPSK unfortunately. On the plus side your MPG won't be harmed by feeling the need to stick the car into Sport and gearbox into manual as often... I've got a trip up to Dornoch in a month and can't wait for the nice twisty roads on the way up.
