Afternoon all, new to the board and I have a question..!

I have the opportunity to purchase a 2001 B10 3.3 Alpina with 43,000 on the clock. With full BMW service history. As it will be a private sale there will be no warranty. The car is in very good condition and has been owned by a mature owner.

My question to people in the know is does the engine have the Vanos system everyone talks about on the M series motors? Has anyone any thoughts on this model i.e. valve for money performance as this will be my first step in to driving a performance car everyday.

Thanks in advance
Mark

Thanks very much Chris. I have driven the car and loved it, I'm just worried about the warrenty (lack of it...!) and any problems that may arise.

Anyone know what the horse power is?

I have a B10 V8 and I love it.

The 3.3 has the straight 6 with IIRC 280bhp so you get the same power as a 540 with the sharper rack and pinion steering that comes with the sixes

The ALPINA Register is worth a look too.

Thanks for the link. I've had a look at the website, looks very good. Does anyone know if the alpina has a Vanos unit?

Cheers,
Mark

It is VANOS, not sure whether single or double though. The V8 went double VANOS same time as the parent BMW motor.

Thankyou for letting me know that was the only concern I had with buying the car. Will be a worry as there is no warranty, may look into third party warranties.

Thanks again,
Mark

Hi Monster26

If you`re not sorted yet and want a B10 with a warranty take a look at mine:

www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/48207.htm

Whatever you do get a good one and you`ll love it. I had a new engine fitted under warranty, I can`t bear to think what that would have cost without one.
They shouldn`t be anymore expensive to run that a standard 5 series. I had a 523 before the B10 and the Alpina is better on fuel consumption. I couldn`t believe it !! One downside is a lot of insurance companies don`t seem to want to know. I would recommend Privilege or Direct Line if you get one.

Get the car well checked over by a qualified person before making that final decision. Its worth it in the end.

Thanks nixB10. I've been promised first refusal (mid next year) on a B10 in the family so will prefer to wait for that. Will take a look at your link though thanks.

Drove the car again on Saturday night, boy do I like the torque of those engines, so effortless to drive.

Cheers,
Mark
