Hi

Im hoping someone can help. I've had an amp failure (HK Logic 7) due to water ingress which also blew the PDC control unit and the roof pump relays. I have managed to fix the roof and I have replaced the PDC controller with a second hand module. The second hand module appears to work, I get the reverse camera and the guidelines etc. but I am getting various orange messages on the dash at power on about parking yourself and auto PDC failing when driving slowly. Is the issue possibly just because the amp is not working and the message is merely stating dont rely on the parking sensors because you wont hear anything. I have the No Tones error at ignition turn on regarding the amp failure. I'm thinking the PDC unit is fine but just need this confirming. I had the same issue previously with the Amp drowning in water and then it getting iced in!. I was able to salvage the amp previously by cleaning it and drying it out but not so lucky this time.

I'm hoping the PDC warnings are purely being cause by the Amp not working but I cannot remember if I had this issue when the amp went before or not.

Any help appreciated,

Cheers

The PDC warnings occur when you hard reset the battery or disconnect the PDC. This is normal. So you can clear the codes if there is a check control error. Or use diagnostic software to clear. It will be fine provided you used the appropriate part (like for like PDC).

If you clear it and it returns it’s likely a PDC unit fault.

The HK only sounds the beeps/gongs from the PDC. So it’s not the HK in this case. It’s only receiving an audio out from the PDC.

Great thanks. I’ve just bought a scanner so I’ll scan her tomorrow and reset.
One thing I didn’t buy a like for like part as in part number
I checked on real oem and found a pdc unit that superseded
my one, that was the only one I could find at the time but it said that it could be exchanged.
Will this cause me any issues? I Kinda thought newer should be better as well.

As long as it’s compatible you’re good. Remember to test safely before trying it out in your local supermarket car park.

Out of interest, with BMW’s, do you have to update the software to a module, when you replace it ?

For instance, on a PDC, would it need to be told wether it should/shouldn’t be looking for signals from the extra 2 park assist sensors, if fitted or not fitted.

Hi Again

Thanks very much for your reply

Ok so interesting........ I plugged my C310+ creator diag scanner in and had an X by the Park Assist and a code. I cleared the code and immediately looking at the Idrive the sensors all came on and it was correctly detecting the trailer in front of my car etc.

I thought great all done. I then turned the ignition on and off and the problem was back again. Repeated what I did before and as soon as the code is cleared, or at least you select clear code from the menu the sensors spring into life as can be seen on the iDrive.

Now when I scan again I dont get an error code but there is still an X next to park assist but just selecting clear code fixes the issue.

Any other ideas? Perhaps the updated module is causing some issues? or do you think the module is at fault? seems weird to work one minute when the codes are cleared but then re-occurs.

Thanks!

Possibly linked?

Thanks

And another update....once I cleared the error code from the C310+ I had park assist enabled as well. I left the car on after I cleared the error code, that wasn't actually there according to the tool, and the sensors all started working as before but then I decided to go get some petrol. At the petrol station it started doing an automatic parking maneuver, very cool but I never had this function before? I am a bit confused now to what is going on so I am hoping someone can help me decipher this?

Many thanks

BMW ecus require programming/coding to the individual car. If your used part isn’t that may well cause it to not work properly. As to whether used parts can be coded/programmed to a different car, that’s a whole other story.

as above due to bmw some parts being encoded i would try and get hold of a copy of ista and an e net cable to do the diagnostics yourself and see what the errors are or take it to a bmw specialist.

if your happy to try yourself drop me an email and ill give a bit more info

4 or 6 park sensors at either end of the vehicle ?

Yes it might not be plug and play as one had hoped. So the car may need to be told “hey you have a superseded PDC” installed. That’s usually a whole car software update to get everything talking to each other. Or coding with something like NCS expert. Find a coder. Shouldn’t be more than £90 by my guess. Or beer tokens if you know someone.

If a module came from a car that has similar sensors to yours then it’s usually fine. For example if I swapped a PDC from a 2017 440i with surround view camera to a 2017 440i surround view camera then it’s usually fine. If I took one from a car with rear view camera only and put it in my surround view car then it would think: errr where have all these other signals come from? What’s going on??????!!!!! Cue errors. Vice versa too. If a surround view PDC was put into a rear view camera only car.

As far as I’m aware, 6 sensors = Park Assist (Parallel parks itself)

Interesting that you never had that working on the old PDC, before it failed.

That is interesting, I am going to ring BMW up to see exactly what spec I have on the car. Thanks for your input.

Ok so according to BMW this is an option on my car, I have never seen this before!
Not sure why it wasn't working in the first place. I still therefore have a fault and the C310+ is saying I dont although there is still a red X against it which I cant seem to clear. Why is nothing ever easy smile

Great and thanks for this, saves me some time. I do have Park Assist! which is great but I never had it before. I am 95% sure I would of noticed this coming up on my dash. I dont even recall seeing those additional options in the settings. Oh well I just need to find out what is causing the error to appear again after clearing the code. Think I might go the ISTA route, the C310+ seems pretty crap tbh.

The C310 is very good for what it’s made for, clearing and reading fault codes and brief live data in a quick portable way.

The only reason I say that is because there is no error code displayed but when I select erase code it all works again.
It basically says no fault found. Also the PDC is still showing in red with a cross against it. Should that be the case?
I’ve contacted their support anyway but it seems pretty odd. This is also the same with sone other things that are showing in red but it reports no fault found.
