My 530i, also N52 engine did this when I first got it. I tried to reject the car at the time with no success but have since covered 67k. It only does it on really hard acceleration but it’s the same each time. I get the EML, rough running etc. If I stop and switch off and on again all is well.
I never got it looked at because the car was slightly troublesome in other areas: slight vibration under braking which was not cured with new discs and pads and a couple of other bits. I came to the conclusion I didn’t want to throw money chasing faults that I could live with and would just run it until something showed as a definite fault. At close to 200k now it’s still running well with only basic maintenance, oils changes, tyres and a couple of coil packs, spark plugs, etc.
One odd thing came up years ago and that was slight blue exhaust smoke under load. I thought it was going to be expensive or even the end of the car (engine). I hooked up my fault code reader and it came up with P0597 Thermostat Heater Control Circuit Open. I cleared this and had the thermostat replaced shortly afterward. It has never done this since in over 50k. I can’t see why this fault would cause the blue smoke so it may have been a coincidence. It never did it after I cleared the code.
The car is great but at this age and mileage I feel cautious about chasing faults that I’m not sure of a cure for.
