Aghhh You set me up!

Seriously The Design is not great on the eye.
BMW Granted but far from an attractive car.

Highly unattractive. Just how practical is it either? I've not examined one close up or had to cart anything around in one, but from the looks of it it isn't very spacious.

BMW could and should do better IMHO.

This is how brands are devalued

I think the back end looks okay, but am still not conviced with the looks as a whole. I drove one as a courtesy car a while ago and although it was painfully slow the quality of it was leagues ahead of the competition

I am not sure what model you drove, the 120 diesel in the fastest in its class, 0-60 in 7.9 secs .. not bad for a economical machine.

I am lovin the style (matter of opinion I appreciate that), it is pretty practical as well, you do not want to be carting 5 New Zealand rugby chaps but for normal size folk it is great. Plenty or boot space and the split seats adds more room if required. There has been a slight loss in boot space to accommodate the rear wheel drive, but having the fun that comes with the rear wheel drive more than makes up for this !

I think it was the petrol one, not 100% sure as it was my girlfiends car whilst hers was being fixed so only drove it a few times.

You are right though, 7.9 for a diesel isn't bad at all, I thought it would be more around the 10 second mark.

its shit!

Had one (116) for a couple of days - the steering is heavy and leaden and has no real centering to speak of, you have to pull the car back to the straight-ahead at anything below motorway speeds (dangerous IMHO), its asthmatic to say the least and the sytling is poo.

Mind you, the interior is Ok (but the doors are too small), the seat was comfortable, the gearbox was light and easy and the brakes were fine.

It is devaluing the brand, and I'd never have one on my drive-way.

I can understand people not liking the looks (they have grown on me, but I can't stand most mid-sized hatches) and complaining about the compromised rear room, but it's the only car in its class that handles properly and the dash is leagues ahead of its competition. The 130i (although too expensive) is a pocket rocket.

I think they're ace. Overpriced for sure, and a slightly compromised package - the engines could do with a bit more poke IMO (at the bottom of the range at least) - but they look so much more interesting than anything else in their class. I like the fact that it's rear wheel drive. I like the fact that when they stick a V6 in it, it'll be a pocket rocket and no mistake.

How is it devaluing the brand? That's nonsense. It's more exclusive than a 3-series, it's more relevant than a X3. I'm considering one as a company car, and if I had the money, I'd buy one as a private purchase too.

Whilst in Germany two weeks a go I went out on the Autobahn in the Hartge 1 Series. It's fitted with the old M5 V8 engine. It's a rocket. Our driver took us up to 280 kilometres per hour (circa 175 mph) and it was still pulling. They would not let us drive it as the clutch has a tendancy to give out and it was due at a photo-shoot later in the week, but they did let us take out their new M5, and tweaked X3 and E90 3 Series.
That 1 Series could be yours for ..... 105,000 Euros (circa £69,500).

Yeah, I know its rear wheel drive, and it did feel planted on the road, but the steering was dreadful! I mean, really, really dead and wooden and lifeless - i had to literally pull the car back to the straight ahead at anything below motorway speeds, and IMHO thats dangerous, steering should self-centre at anything over 5-10 mph.

I must admit.. I am a 1 series fan (in case you had not guessed) but even I would look to something more exclusive for that price
