Yesterday i took my car to Power Enginering for a rolling road session. The only mods it has is a Gruppe M carbon induction kit. (so it is pretty much standard)

The car put out an amazing 219 bhp & 226 flb torque!!

I could not belive it, i was expecting a little over 193 bhp (standard figures)

The diagnostician said that the 328's had smaller inlets on the intake manifold due to emission laws.
He recomemded changing it for a 325i inlet manifold and i should see an even bigger difference to the Bhp.

Does this seem right? Is the 325i manifold different from mine?

The E36 328i engine was deliberately strangled to keep the bhp under the German tax threshold (195bhp IIRC).

Try and get the inlet manifold from an E36 Alpina B3 3.0 or 3.2. Also, removing the restrictor in the air filter box and fitting a big bore throttle body will get you a 220+ bhp engine.

Any ideas on breathing improvements to a 325i?

Whilst on a roll, does the tips below apply to the E39 528 , it's abit gutless at low rpm, any simple bits for it besides buying a 540 .

Well my e36 328i has got a gruppe m carbon air induction system. I bought it from hyper turismo.

Thats the only mod that i have done (previous owner may have chipped it) and it made a huge difference.

Also the sound this thing makes is incredible, its quite if you drive normaly, but when you put your foot down it makes a brilliant sound!!

Same M52 engine so why not. Only difference might be the construction of the air filter box on the E39.

There is a chap on the e36coupe forums who does a big bore throttle body and modified manifold on exchange for about £300 (maybe less). I've seen successive dyno runs done to a 328 which show at a least 20bhp jump. There are a few blokes getting near 240bhp from relatively minor mods.

And yes, it fits the 528.

I've heard brilliant things about the gruppeM systems, know that road reads right as well so trust those figs.

Did they tell you the wheels fig by any chance?

I am sorry to say they didn't.

I am still shocked that it put out that much power.
