Have a good test drive in one. I had a short drive and it was very impressive, but as a passenger on a longer journey I started to notice how it moves around at motorway speeds and tackles bumps.

My driver said it was the two Compaq servers we had in the boot, but i'm not convinced.

Also, I felt a bit cramped in the passenger side, my knees were up against the dashboard.

Pitty really, because I *really* like the big V8 ones.

I sold my TVR to buy an X5, for same reasons (but have 3 kids). In my opinion, if you have to buy a "family" car, it's a good choice. I test drove an 03 reg 4.4 and bought a new 4.4 (04) sport - no regrets on the choice (over other 4x4s or other X5 models) - it is fast enough, but doesn't wallow around like most 4x4s - the ride is firm but I've done plenty of 300 mile drives in it and no probs with comfort - build quality is very good - V8 is a blast.

Only grumble is that the boot could do with being a bit bigger (say Range Rover size); if you have more than 1 kid and lots of stuff to cart around it soon fills. But, I didn't like driving the alternatives (Range Rover, Grand Cherokee, ML etc).

Three years ago I changed from a 328Ci to a X5 3.0d sport for family reasons. Thought the X5 was excellent and didn't regret the loss of performance (which won't be so bad with the 4.4).

Enjoyed the X5 so much, just traded it in for a new one. The first one ran for 52,000 miles over three years and never let me down once.
