EGR problems after EGR cooler replaced(recall)
Discussion
Hi. Im new here so please be nice. In April i took my car into a BMW dealership as it had an EGR related recall, so they have changed EGR Coolers and after a while my car started to get these weird problems like twitching when shifting up or revs just freeze for like a fraction of a second and it feels like there's a loss of power as well... So i took it to a local garage for the guys to plug the diagnostics in and it came up with 6 engine warnings and mainly all related to EGR valve. Now when I told them that it comeback from an EGR recall they had told me to take it back to the dealership as its their fault and they should fix it for free. Ive booked my car in and BMW had told me if its their fault they'll fix it for free and if its not they will be charging me £177 for an hours diagnostics. What are the chances that these problems are not related to the recall as i really dont wanna be spending £177 for an hours work. Sorry for the long post
Did not put 2 and 2 together but the thread I have just started is about Drivetrain problems. Now what you discribe is what I have had with my car especially when slowing and the car changing down, very intermittent, like you this is after I had the EGR works done. I have a warranty with my car, so I hope that will be sorted.
Mine is a 640d, had the egr job done after a long wait...1000 miles later massive leak and coolant loss.
Took it back to the dealer and they told me it was unrelated
Small pipe on the side of the block was leaking. They claimed it was unrelated, i couldnt be arsed with the hassle and arguments and ordered the pipe and got a BMW specialist to fit it.
The speciaiist commented that it looked like it hadnt been put back together properly by the dealer but i just wanted to car back for use as id been in a 1.6 Insignia for a month so just paid, The dealer was BMW Leeds
Have a check and see what the dealer says, Leeds didnt charge me for telling me what was wrong so diagnostic charge

got my egr cooler replaced last week after i got a drive chain message and my 5 series went into limp mode!!!.
took it in to bmw seafield edinburgh they did it the following day.
seems whovever checked my egr valve last recall didnt connect my inlet pipe correctly!!!!.
all bolted up and seems ok now.

My car was taken in for the recall a few months ago under a previous owner.
The egr cooler is now visiblly leaking, i have spoken to bmw who have my car with them today. Apparently they only changed the cooler on my car and the valve now also needs replacement as it is throwing some codes but not lighting the dash.
If anything it needs a clean which i can do myself. My concern is im sure they replaced the coolers and egr valve together. And a cooler leaking could of accelearted the deposits in the egr valve.
The car has been with them all day and they haven't inspected the car!

The egr valve also has coolant lines connected to it - but the egr valve does need to be removed to replace the cooler so I would suspect they have damaged it when doing this. It might be worth asking them about this and also saying that if the problem was already existing they should have noticed it when it was removed
Thanks, i found that information out too last night whilst looking at videos of the part.
I've asked them if the part was damaged whilst they changed ghe the cooler, they said no. The egr valve is gunged up too so it will be hard for me to convince them.
Supply and fit ive been quoted 250£ which isn't bad from a main dealer when the part itself is 184£. I can fit this myself but kind of need the car back asap.
My advice to anyone going to get their egr cooler checked is that first find out what was changed, get an independent garage to check what is wrong and get hem to clarify between cooler and valve, most people use them synonymously.
I'm currently trying to get the diagnosis fee waived...

Hi. Ive had a similar problem. Loss of power in my 2015 320d. Took it to an independent garage and was diagnosed as faulty egr valve. Not the cooler as far as I'm aware. They have advised me to go to BMW because of the recall. The car was recalled because of this in 2018. BMW want £110 to rediagnose it!! Will they repair it free of charge? Or am I best sticking with my independent? Many thanks for any replies.
If it’s lasted two years since the cooler was replaced then I don’t think it’s related
If it’s only intermittently losing power it could be just sticking - if the plastic cover is removed on the side of the valve then u can normally clean it up and grease the mechanism till it moves smoothlyagain

EGR Recall Sep 2020 on a 2013 520d. The main dealer in Peterborough put in a shiny new EGR cooler and 5 weeks later (750 miles) later we hit the dreaded drivetrain error while overtaking/accelerating uphill - slightly worrying. Fortunately we were 5 miles from home as even after stopping and power cycling the engine - limp home mode remained and came back each time the car moved off the drive! A week later, the local indie BMW garage sniffed out 24A100/244C00 and 398700, but couldn't get close to the issue and recommended going back to main dealer. Although I now had codes indicating charge pressure too low/actuator open circuit. I'm booked in with the main dealer for the next available slot - in 2 weeks time which I'll cancel in a week's time all being well from the fix this morning.
A little google-fu last night pointed me to air hose leaks/actuators/sensors (as well as manifold swivel flaps/turbo issues!) so removing the air-filter box and ducting for access, I did some basic checks and found the electrical connector to the small turbo actuator was so loose that it came away in my hand. Now pushed fully back in (till it clicked) - no more error codes and I can hear the faint whir of the small turbo at low revs. The main dealer's work to replace the EGR cooler looks great, but the 10 sec task at the end of this job to reconnect the actuator properly created a needle in a haystack. I'm not convinced the main dealer would have picked this up given the indie missed it. I'd rather not cough up for smoke tests, hose replacements, turbo swapouts (ouch), PDF replacements and thought I'd share this relatively basic check and fix with you - just in case someone else is having issues after the EGR cooler is replaced.

@TheoR
Apols for not getting back to you sooner.
I gave the main dealer a call after the weekend and spoke to the workshop manager. I explained what I found and how it fixed the problem and said I'd like to check there's no other faults. To give him his due, he said come in any time and ask for him by name. He also said that that connection isnt touched when replacing the EGR cooler.... which I found slightly odd as there's a bunch of leads/conduits attached to a long plastic block sitting directly on top of the EGR cooler.
Turned up a couple of days later and he got it straight into the workshop and plugged in the OBD. No errors and all was now good - but no idea why the connection was loose. I figured it was odd that it had taken 75k miles to work loose and when it did it was directly after the recall, showed him a £57 code-sniffing invoice from the Indie the previous week and and asked if there was anything BMW could do. I wasn't expecting them to admit liability but they did reimburse me £57! Make of that what you will.
Car is fine.....no longer any concerns that there's a fault I dont know about, and I may well end up getting the ITSA OBD s/w for my future peace of mind. Definitely get the main dealer to do the EGR cooler swap as thats safety critical. I'm guessing whoever did the work on my car got an earful the other week so that shouldn't happen again (for a while anyhow).

Hi there,
I’m new here.
Just thought I’d add that my 640d gc has now plucked up an issue after a few thousand miles since having my EGR Cooler recalled.
Went to main dealer who insisted it was not their fault and not a result of EGR Cooler replacement works.
Plugged in a OBD2 Scanner and the fault code came back as P046C fault code. Car seems ok but definitely seems to be a bit more rough on start ups, and did let off a weird smell when warmed up.
I’ve gone through my own warranty and hopefully this should be sorted end of the month with any luck.
But very very inconvenient to say the least.

hi, so dropped my 330d in today for the recall on the cooler. Had a call saying this was OK but needs a new valve....quoted £212 for this. Service guy says they can replace it, I pay and then he'll see if he can a goodwill refund from BMW next week. Ive refused this as I want to get confirmation of BMW paying for this first.
My question is...should BMW be paying for the replacement value anyway? Isn't it part of the same system they have recalled the car for? Looking on line it seems there has been a recall for both valve and cooler over the past couple of years?
What's others experience ? Its at Snows and every experience I have with them is a problem....I feel again like I'm being ripped off!

I thought at £300 i got a good deal on my EGR valve. £212 is a mighty good deal. My question is...should BMW be paying for the replacement value anyway? Doubt you will get anything from BMW, I wasn’t even given the option to take it as far as you have with yours. Good luck either way!
