running in and servicing?

Can anyone explain the running in period and also servicing intervals in simple English for me. As I believe it its 1200 miles at no more than 5500 revs then a free check up and oil change. Is it then Inspection 1 followed by Inspection 2 based on the service count down indicator?? does this mean that if you are a low mileage user its possible to go beyond a year between services and still have the 3 years warranty.

I didnt mention which car this is for. Its for a new M3

then OIL Service

then INS I

then OIL Service

Then INS II

and thats how it continues.

The distance between each service is variable and the count down clock is the figures displayed when you turn the ignition on in your mileage display!
