BMW M5 arrives at dealers

But they're all spoken for until 2007

BMW M5 -- you can't get one until 2007
BMW M5 -- you can't get one until 2007

After nearly three years of waiting since the previous M5 ceased production, deliveries of the all-new £61,760 BMW M5 started to UK dealers on 19 May. The bad news is that all are sold or spoken for the next two years.

The initial profiteers this weekend were offering M5s for sale in the small ads of the various motoring magazines and quality Sunday papers so you could buy a new M5 – at a price.

The UK will get 580 new M5s this year, and BMW GB expects demand to even out to between 450 and 500 units a year. These figures are not written in stone and product manager Lee Connolly said he expects to be able to negotiate with BMW's M Division to increase their allocation. He said it would take around 18 months before they will know the full sales potential of the M5 and the upcoming M6. The UK is the third largest BMW M product market in the world behind the US and Germany.

He added, "Forty of the new M5s ordered so far by UK customers have been requested with the bullet proof glass £1,135 option". Heads of industry and football club owners (not players) are the rumoured customers.

Connolly said, "As advance orders for the M5 suggests they are all sold until mid 2007, the challenge we have is to keep the customers interested. Part of this process will be the Rockingham Driving experience (see link below) where customers and potential buyers will undergo driver-training programmes and these are being organised directly with the clients by BMW’s UK dealers.

"We have been training our dealers to handle customer expectations knowing that demand has outstripped supply. Our dealers are also filtering out speculative customers. I would like to think this is non-existent but to some people dealing in rare cars is a business.

"We might also find some initial customers who have placed orders for the M5 will change their minds and opt for the M6 Coupe instead. With the M6 we are starting to see more interest from female buyers."

Connelly said, "Customers for the M5 are made up of existing owners of the previous model who have kept their cars longer waiting for the new model, some have bought the 5-Series Sport models and are now changing up. There are a fair number of conquest customers from Mercedes, Audi, Porsche and Jaguar. Predominately these customers are male aged between 40 and 55 years of age, run two to three cars in the family and predominately it is company money buying the car.

"Forty-five per cent are specifying the full interior leather option for the car, it’s the first time we’ve offered a leather dashboard on any 5-Series. Because the new M5 is so fully equipped there is not much customers can add to the specification so, over and above the leather facia upgrade, customers are ordering heated rear seats, rear headphones for passengers and the bullet-proof glass".

With 507bhp of power, 520Nm of torque, a top speed limited to 155mph and a 0-62mph time of 4.7 seconds, much of the media talk has been about the option to de-restrict the top speed of the M5. BMW said it has taken the responsible ‘high ground’ and stuck to the general industry agreement that 155mph should be the top speed available. However other manufacturers have broken away from this agreement and BMW said it has no power over any customer wishing to have their car de-restricted to achieve the 204mph of which it is capable. BMW confirmed that by de-restricting the car it would not invalidate the car’s warranty.

Lee Connolly said, "In reality having a de-restricted car is all about customer talk, fashion and a ‘mine’s de-restricted’ attitude – it is an emotional thing to have it. If the car is being used for track days or motorsport that is a different issue but outside Germany, where can you use a car at that speed?"

The new BMW M5 is the first volume production car to offer a high revving V10 engine and a seven speed sequential gearbox. The 5.0-litre, aluminium engine produces its maximum power at 7,750rpm but it is redlined at 8,250rpm. Power output is 25 per cent more than its predecessor.

Although the new engine shares the same V10 configuration with the BMW F1 engine it is not directly related. The F1 engine is of 3.0-litres, not 5.0-litre and only has to last for two races. However BMW reckoned the inspiration for the electronics and engine design was drawn from its F1 experience. The engine management system derived from F1 can perform more than 200 million individual calculations per second. Continuing with the FI heritage the lightweight block and cylinder heads are cast at the same BMW foundry as the F1 engine. Well, that makes a big difference then.

The new engine delivers two levels of power output. Each time it is started it is in 400bhp mode. This is to suit normal urban traffic conditions where 507bhp is not required. By operating the MDrive button on the steering wheel the power is increased to 507bhp. Eleven bespoke gear-change programmes, throttle response times and suspension settings are included in the MDrive Manager programme. A head-up display with information, including the navigation system, is shown in the lower edge of the windscreen.

Its a shame that it just looks like a big barge!
The E39 looks so much more of a drivers car without all the big metal road presence they are trying to create. Look what i mean,

I agree, it looks like a retarded chimp designed it. Apparently Bangle thinks it looks like a race car. Riiight. Y'see, over here in Oz, in 2002, some people disliked the arse end of the new Commodore (thats a sedan, oops, saloon version of the Vauxhall Monaro to you) that they grafted on a modified previous model back end. Wonder if any dimwitted M5 owners-to be will graft on some E39 headlights? Uuugh...

Who gives a stuff what it looks like when it drives as well as it does!! The Subaru and Evo's are ugly cars, but great driver's cars.

Anyway, you can't see what it looks like when you're behind the wheel!!

I know of a main dealer who's had one in the showroom for a few days. The sales staff were upset because the customer saw it arrive and knows there's only 16 miles on the clock so they can't take it out for a razz. The service dept. intend to get it up to max revs when they PDI it to see what it sounds like.

I guess this kind of thing goes on at every dealer, it's probably best not to know about it as you can't stop it.

Awesome! I want one! Maybe one day

I also think they look pretty damn good. The 5 series was never meant to look like a race car.

That's what makes it so appealling. Looks quite ordinary yet it can beat most cars off the line (including some Ferrari's, Porsches, Lambo's, etc.....)

At the moment though, i'm aiming for an E46 M3

I don't think that's typical of all BMW Dealer's. Sounds like some over excited individual using poetic licence!

Staggering car. Went in Adams fathers E60 on saturday and can't wait until they are 4/5 years old and can be picked up for reasonable money like the E39 can now.

I admire your restraint; after that Tiff display, a Draxian inevitability looms large like a great, big looming thing.

Lumme!

I recorded this last night due to being at the cinema watching the antics of some of my jedi predecessors. Got back home at just gone midnight, fired on the TV and watched what can best be described as yet another fifth gear stylee report of powerslide, powerslide and more bloody powerslides. I'm getting concerned with the reporting style tbh. No stats, no demo of the F1 launch control, no detailed performance figures, no detailed look at the interior, comment on space/headroom, effectiveness of the satnav, ground clearance etc. I must be getting old.

This is what I thought when the E39 was new. Now that they can be had for reasonable money, they don't appeal like they did when the E60 wasn't there

Bloody automobile industry is playing tricks on us

I will have one ( a new M5 that is), it really does seem to be a car that can do just about everything (I'm assuming it has split rear seats for the tip trip )

The older I get the more I want to have just one car that I can use every day which will give me all the things I need.

mental sportscar
large shopping ability
cross country motorway muncher
comfy cruiser
throbbing monster

I think this could be it, all I need now is more cash.

So if anyone needs any business systems developing, a little integration work, perhaps you'd like to start trading online

Am I the only one that pissed himself laughing when he saw the 400bhp "normal" mode??? WHY????? Either have a LOW bhp normal mode and a FULL mode or - just as I would - just have it in FULL mode all the time.

I only have an 850R at the mo' (decent motor though) and even that stays in sport mode instead of all this econ crap.

If you want a car with less bhp or softer gearing by the normal barge!

Yeah, well apparently its designer does. And stuff a normal M3 how bouts a M3 GTR or Hamann Laguna Seca? The Hamann looks tasteful, unlike some other Euro tuners and is powered by a tweaked 500hp 760Li V12. Hooray!!!
