Well, I've agreed a deal on a 1999 M5. Poverty spec and fairly mileagy but price reflects (I think) - its also got 6 months BMW warranty left. Its silverstone blue with black leather.

Its going in to BMW on wednesday to have a checkover before I pay for it, but all being well should be mine by the weekend!

A couple of questions (aside from 'how do I make the week go quicker'):

Any major issues I need to specifically look out for when I collect, which the BMW checkover might not pick up?

Does anyone know what equipment was standard on a 1999 car? I can't remember some of the details - I think it had cruise control, but can't remember for the life of me if it had parking sensors (for the Mrs you understand ).

Congratulations.

Prepare to drive everywhere and risk confirming the stereotype.

Watch the oil level (hopefully 1 litre/3000 miles with a few clicks up on the odo) and make sure you're happy with the brakes.

Superlightr (eminent PHer) is the dissenting E39 M5 voice since he had genuine problems but I thought it was worth he risk and did it anyway.

Not sure the car likes standing more than a week(?) since I've had a couple of flatties but what are the prospects of it not being exercised regularly?

The stability when driving through the notional limiter in 5th is unadulterated nectar, as is the overall handling poise: I enjoy violent bend committment enormously and marvelling at how 1800 kilos can be so well tied down during such hooning?

That's the other thing, I must admit - I've started to devour tyres.

I'm even getting 18.6 on the trip 'puter which is frugal by past standards.

You're in for a treat and I believe another member of the top able is about to avail himself imminently but I'll let him reveal his hand.

Congratulations.

Just sold my merc this morning and agreed a deal on an E39 M5 this afternoon. Collect on the 21st, when there will be much celebrating on the evening.

Congrats!

I've just sold my (poverty spec, as you put it!) 2000/V M5. From what I recall its options were:

- Park Distance
- 6 CD changer
- Delete rear spoiler

.. which was odd as it did, infact, have the rear lip spoiler! I think cruise was standard though.

Have fun - mine is already being sorely missed!

May I be so bold as to ask what it fetched? Email me if you prefer.

Thanks, Max

Thanks to everybody else - I'm very much looking forward to driving the complete polar opposite of my departed elise!

Should be a superb day and night. Can't think of a better bunch of people to get drunk with celebrating the new car, than a bunch of PHers.

Splendid development, Herr Russe.

I assume you will be Tubi-ing?

Would you believe that one of Colin's gang at 9M finally sorted my bloody zorst at sodding last?

I had come very close to ripping the damn thing out but all it required was a bit of spacing at the mid point where it seems that when, er, 'under load' the pipes were clattering against it.

Duly fettled, the thunder can resume, wobble free!

The Tubi exhaust tailpipes enhance the appearance of the rear aspect and the system itself undoubtedly improves pick up throughout the rev range. Tunnels can become quite fun and most fully bored flights are accompanied by the most glorious howl.

Which is nice, when checking out one's limiter...in 5th

I'm getting The Ninemeister to rig up a brake system fit for a car, not a Fisher Price pastic donkey and this may involve Porsche components.

Then it will be near perfect. I recommend you all follow suit.

DER

Which Tubi system have you got. The Rumore or the normal not so loud one? do you ever think it's too much noise. Listening to a tubi on a lambo murkywotsit last weekend, I think my neighbours would end up suing me!! I never thought I'd say it, but on that car I'm sure I would find it too loud after a while.

DAZ

PS - Anyone got a tubi on an E39 M5 anywhere near Bristol that I could have a listen to? His lordship lives too far north and my passport is out of date.

Hi, and congratulations. I think, and don't say this lightly, you have just bought the worlds best car.

My 2001 M5 had every concievable extra, but to be honest the only one that matters is the engine. Can't even remember when I turned the TV on.

Ask the dealer to download the latest software for the display thingy. If not you can find it on the internet for download to a CD and then plug in the back for an upgrade.

I think the car is the ultimate Q car. For the first time ever I turned round while driving and saw my whole family (wife and two kids) asleep in the car. (My wife has never slept in a car while moving before). And when I reached my destination and despatched the ankle biters raced a Cerbera to within an inch of its life.

Truly it is the car for all seasons and all occasions.

You (or 9M) might want to check out the big brake upgrade kits offered by Stoptech. They have a very good reputation and provide UK pricing.

or speak to HTR about an AP Racing 6 pot conversion - probably cheaper than using Porsche parts and AP do make the worlds best brakes IMO. IIRC the 356mm 6 pot AP conversion for the CSL is about £1600.

Oh, Daz - standard one.

The other one is apparently absurd whereas mine has a rounded burble at idle, rising to a thoroughly agreeable intrusion when treating certain parameters of the limitational variety with the contempt they deserve.

My only gripe that I must acknowledge, is that if you're momentarily in too high a gear when bumbling through Nether Crumblingscum at 28mph, there is an element of the boomy resonanace which isn't so pronounced on the standard exhaust: but this is nothing compared to the overall benefits.

I'm not sure the start up procedure is any louder than yon silver bullette.

Derestrictor I was sure you had the 'Rumore' but I guess you know !! I'm in the process of sourcing a Tubi for my little blue friend. Did you notice a power increase, think I will go down the Rumore road as I want to get my ££'s worth of neighbour annoyance, I do love been woken on a Sunday morning by his Stingray, (I do its the best sound on this planet).
did you use Scuderiea (sp) they are close to me.

Grant
