Had the car a year. Then noticed a yellow light in dashboard that wouldn't go away. Went to BMW today. £1.8k to open the engine and clear the carbon.

Would you say that's a normal price? Dont want to be getting ripped off by a car dealer, official bmw or not

£1800 to do what exactly?, and why does it need doing?

I’d be buying a £30 code reader and finding out what it actually is.

If it’s carbon build
Up on the back of the valve then walnut blasting will do it and it’s something bmw dealers have the equipment to do- couple hundred quid to do. They might also be replacing inlet manifold which will bump the price up.

But for the price u have been quoted, it sounds like they are removing the head to do the decoke which is not necessary anymore and hasn’t been for quite a few years

Agree with the above, I had a walnut blast done for £300ish as a preventative job. Try a different dealer I this one insists.

For that cost it will be replacing the inlet manifold due to carbon build up, possibly including the EGR valve and cooler.

I would also highlight to them whilst there to check the EGR valve and cooler. The EGR coolers are the problems relating to the fires mostly in Korea which essentially is because of coolant mixing with carbon and the EGR valve ends up melting the plastic inlet manifold. The carbon build up of the inlet manifold is a well known problem but for ease of removal you might as well remove the manifold and EGR system.

BMW UK have apparently not sent this recall out to dealers yet, but there is a press release from Munich about the issues, your engine would be the N57 and from what you are saying would fall in the region of these issues and this recall.

To me for the EML which is what is sounds like then it must be restricting flow of air hugely, which would lead me to believe you might have issues around the EGR area as well. Hence stating the above.

An N57 manifold is from memory just over £1,200, so I could believe the final bill being around the figures mentioned, but confirm they are replacing the manifold if it is that.

It is one area why the insured warranties from BMW whilst not "cheap" if something does happen can make you relieved in terms of cost as the parts costs on these cars is very high.

Can't really do that because they charge you over a hundred just for hooking it up to a computer to find the fault of why the yellow signal is coming up on dashboard.

They were charging £1.8k just to open up the engine to clean it of the carbon. Then refused to include a service with this charge, but after rejecting their offer, they agreed to include a service. I'll e-mail them to detail exactly what they're fixing.

As expensive as it is, these really are normal costs for the X5/X6. I would get a full report and try an independent if it is too much for you.

Mileage is 39k.

So anyway, I emailed the official car dealer. After several days, this has just come in:

My question to you guys is, do you believe we've been misled? If so, please do state so because I'm fortunate enough to be in a financially capable position to take strong legal action. I hate car dealers that take advantage of people when they suspect they don't know about cars.

So to clarify, it's £1.8k for this repair per above description which will also include a full service.

I think you should take the sender of that e mail to court for mangling the English Language.

Need more details.

As asked, how old is it?

You say you have had the car a year?
Was it bought as an approved used car?
Is it 11 months 3 weeks? 12 months 3 weeks?

I would be pushing for some support first of all.

After a year from new our 2.0d X1 went into limp mode. EGR valve replaced under warranty. No mention of a decoke required. Didn't those go away 30 years ago?
Blame was squarely on supermarket diesel. No doubt in technician's mind and he was dead right. That's what we'd been using. Now only Shell, BP, or Texaco as advised by BMW.
If they're right, that's what has caused your coking up too, yes?
